High Five! Program-Defining Day at Inland Northwest Invitational Sees Vikings Set Five School Records

SPOKANE, Wash. — Portland State head track & field coach Joseph Blue said in the leadup to Saturday's Inland Northwest Invitational that he was eagerly waiting for the first school record of the season to fall.

The Vikings got that in the first event of the day…then another…and another…and another…and one more for good measure.

In one of the best single days in recent memory for the Portland State track & field program, the Vikings set five different school records between the women's 4x200-meter relay, men's and women's 300 meters, women's 800 meters and men's weight throw. Ironically, there is no definitive record for most school records set in one day. But five is the most in the recent memory of those around the program.

Picking a headline out of that group may be like asking a parent to pick their favorite child. But the most anticipated one may have been Emma Stolte's record in the women's 800 meters. Stolte had come close to the record at the Silver & Blue Invitational on Jan. 10, finishing in 2:11.99 while the record stood at 2:11.65.

The women's 800-meter indoor record also carried a bit of extra cache considering who owned it. Katie Camarena set the record as part of one of the best individual seasons in program history in 2022. Between cross country and indoor, Camarena broke seven school records and two conference records while qualifying for the NCAA Cross Country and Indoor Championships. No one had bettered any of Camarena's seven school records until Stolte beat the 800 mark Saturday.

Stolte didn't just beat it, she smashed it, shaving more than three seconds off the mark with a finish in 2:08.51. Stolte's time placed her second overall and marked a new personal best by close to three and a half seconds.

Daniel Coppedge already held the men's weight throw record, but like Stolte, he had been eagerly waiting to set it again going into Saturday's meet. Throwing in the same venue as when he set the record the first time, Coppedge added nearly two feet to his mark with a throw of 57-11.00 (17.65m) on his second of six attempts.

Sienna Rosario was part of two of the other three records Saturday. Both came in overall wins, making Rosario potentially the biggest winner of the day for the Vikings. Rosario posted an individual win in the women's 300 meters, beating Washington State's Lashanna Graham by more than a tenth of a second while finishing in 40.24 seconds. Rosario's time was more than 1.3 seconds faster than Alyssa Tibbs' previous record of 41.56 seconds from 2007.

The record in the 300 meters came after Rosario ran the second of four legs on the Vikings' 4x200-meter relay team. Ocean Rideout, Savannah Beasley and Ashley Peterson joined Rosario on the relay team, which edged Northwest Nazarene for the event win in 1:42.19. Peterson got the baton for the anchor leg with a 10-meter deficit but passed the runner ahead of her along the back stretch and then held on for the win.

The event win and school record – admittedly by default as the Vikings hadn't run an indoor 4x200-meter relay before – got the day started for the Vikings.

Rosario's record in the women's 300 meters followed, while Jack Macdonald mirrored her with a school record on the men's side of the 300 meters. Macdonald placed second overall in 34.94 seconds, bettering the record Trevor Rollinger set in 2007 by more than four-tenths of a second.

Outside of the overall records, Natalie Fisher added another freshman record in the women's shot put. Fisher set the record on her opening attempt of the day, throwing 42-07.00 (12.98). Fisher bettered a 15-year-old freshman mark set by Shae Carson with the throw, which also marked a new personal best by close to two and a half feet.

Fisher's freshman record moved her up to seventh in the overall top 10 of the women's shot put. The Vikings got three other top 10 marks Saturday to go along with the new records.

Peterson followed Rosario into the top 10 of the women's 300 meters, finishing in 42.14 seconds. That marked a new personal best by close to two full seconds while moving Peterson up to fourth all-time at the distance.

Dillon Brost, meanwhile, joined Macdonald in the top 10 on the men's side of the 300 meters. Brost finished in 36.56 seconds to move up to sixth all-time.

Isaiah Cadengo set the other new top 10 mark as the freshman became only the second man to crack 48 seconds in the indoor 400 meters. Cadengo placed second overall in 47.99 seconds. He already ranked second all-time at the distance but now trails Sheldon Prince's school record from 2014 by only 13-hundredths of a second.

Cadengo, Macdonald and Brost ran three of the four legs on the Vikings' 4x400-meter relay which won its heat in 3:21.71. Freshman Zach Payne joined those three on the relay team. Macdonald put the Vikings in first after his second leg. The Vikings still led by about five meters when Cadengo took the baton for the anchor leg. Cadengo started out conservative but then turned on the juice for the last lap and a half as the Vikings stretched their lead to win by close to two seconds over Trinity Western.

The Vikings' time of 3:21.71 marked their best in an indoor 4x400-meter relay since 2017 when they finished in 3:20.17 at the UW Invitational.

Payne's opening leg in the 4x400-meter relay came after a personal best of 22.33 seconds in the 200 meters. That put Payne only one-hundredth of a second outside of the top 10 in the event.

Aidan Sweeney nearly set a top 10 mark of his own in the men's 60-meter hurdles. Sweeney qualified for the final of the event – the third straight meet out of three at which he's qualified for the final – with a personal best of 8.55 seconds. That put him just four-hundredths of a second behind the current No. 10 time of 8.51 seconds that Jon Hill set in 2005.

Savannah Beasley qualified for the finals of the women's 60-meter hurdles with a personal best of her own. Beasley placed seventh in the prelims with a time of 9.44 seconds, then lowered that to 9.38 seconds while placing sixth in the final. Beasley has now set a new personal best at all three meets at which she's run the hurdles this season.

Rosario continued to lower her time in the open 60 meters. In between her records in the 4x200-meter relay and 300 meters, Rosario finished the prelims of the 60 meters in 7.81 seconds, marking a new personal best by seven-hundredths of a second.

The Vikings also got four personal or seasonal bests out of the men's and women's mile. Shayda Zarrin and Emily Schmitke both bettered the marks they set a week ago at the Portland Indoor 1 while finishing in 5:27.79 and 5:40.65, respectively. Luke Gillingham and Farhan Ibrahim matched them with personal bests on the men's side of the mile, while finishing in 4:21.16 and 4:24.08, respectively. Ibrahim's time moved him up to sixth all-time in the freshman top 10.

Avonlea Edwards set a freshman top 10 mark in the women's weight throw, bettering her prep best by more than six feet with a mark of 41-06.50 (12.66m).
