PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland State head track & field coach
Joseph Blue said that his athletes competing at Sunday's Portland Indoor 1 would have a chance to prove themselves.
Well, they appeared to take advantage of that opportunity, securing three overall wins, 12 more heat wins, two overall top 10 marks and four freshman top 10 marks while competing close to home at the University of Portland's Chiles Center.
The Vikings swept the overall wins in the men's and women's 600 meters.
Zach Payne won it on the men's side for the Vikings, while
Irina López won it on the women's side.
Payne won the men's side of the 600 meters by more than a second while finishing in 1:22.92. Payne, who narrowly missed a top 10 mark in the 200 meters earlier in the season, made sure to put his name in the record book this time around, securing the No. 9 mark in the 600 meters. His time Sunday also ranks him second in the freshman top 10.
The Viking men got two more heat wins out of the 600 meters between
Aidan Brown and
Mohamed Ahmed. Brown won his heat by close to half a second while finishing in a personal best of 1:27.88. Ahmed won his heat by more than 12 seconds while finishing in 1:29.01.
López, meanwhile, won the women's 600 meters by a quarter of a second over Western Oregon's Madison Huri, finishing in 1:38.19. That wasn't better than López's time of 1:37.52 from last season's PSU vs. UP Dual Meet at the Chiles Center, which still ranks her fourth all-time in the women's 600 meters.
Ashley Peterson bettered her top 10 mark in a later heat of the 600 meters. Peterson shaved 11-hundredths of a second off her time from last season's Portland Indoor 1, keeping her at No. 8 all-time with a new best of 1:39.22.
Addison Capozzi edged teammate
Hannah Butterfield for a heat win later in the 600 meters. Capozzi finished in 1:42.21 for a three-second personal best, while Butterfield finished in 1:42.28 behind her. Butterfield's time moved her up to fifth in the freshman top 10.
The freshman top 10 mark in the 600 meters came as part of a busy day for Butterfield. The freshman opened her day with a heat win in the 200 meters, edging teammate
Norhan Abdel Halim by one-hundredth of a second to win in 28.22 seconds. Butterfield then anchored the Viking women's overall win in the 4x400-meter relay, joining Capozzi, Abdel Halim and
Emily Schmitke to finish in 4:15.82.
Butterfield's heat win in the 200 meters came as part of four for the Viking women.
Sienna Rosario was not one of those four, though she posted the top time of any Viking with a finish in 25.80 seconds to place second overall.
Ocean Rideout won her heat by close to a second while finishing fourth overall in 26.63 seconds. That marked a new overall best in the 200 meters for Rideout by close to half a second.
Savannah Beasley added another heat while finishing fifth overall in 26.71 seconds. Beasley shaved five-hundredths of a second off the personal best she set at the Silver & Blue Invitational two weeks earlier.
Lydia Medina provided the fourth heat win for the Viking women in the 200 meters while placing 12th overall in 27.93 seconds. That was four-hundredths of a second faster than her time last week at the UW Preview.
Phoenix Bakkum led the Vikings on the men's side of the 200 meters, setting an indoor best by three-tenths of a second with his finish in 23.93 seconds. Freshman
Carson Schall gave the Viking men a heat win in the 200 meters while finishing 18th overall in 24.08 seconds.
The Viking men got two other freshman top 10 marks between
Ari Smith in the 800 meters and
Vince Estrada in the mile. Smith, who ran the No. 4 freshman time in the mile last week at the UW Preview, added the No. 8 freshman time in the 800 meters to his resume Sunday. Smith pushed the pace in his section of the race before finishing third overall in 1:57.63.
Fellow freshman
Farhan Ibrahim won his section of the 800 meters by more than 20 seconds while finishing in 2:02.10.
Estrada, meanwhile, posted the No. 9 freshman time in the mile while finishing seventh overall in 4:25.88.
Ian Parks didn't post a heat win or a freshman top 10 but still beat a six-year-old indoor best in the mile while finishing 19th overall in 4:38.30.
Shayda Zarrin debuted with a heat win on the women's side of the mile for the Vikings. Zarrin won her heat by 17 seconds while finishing 13th overall in 5:32.22.
The Vikings will be back on the road next week, as they head to the Inland Northwest Invitational, Jan. 31, in Spokane, Wash. Blue said before Sunday's meet that he hoped the Vikings competing would make the decision on who will travel to that meet as hard as possible.
They certainly didn't make it easy.
