SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The best athletes know how to meet the moment. No one has that in their blood more within the Portland State track & field program than
Dieumerci Migani who produced a second straight record-breaking performance at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships Saturday at Hornet Stadium.
A year after Migani produced two school records while scoring 11 points for the Vikings at the 2024 conference outdoor meet, he found a way to top that. With scoring finishes in the finals of the 100 meters, long jump and triple jump, Migani totaled 17 points individually at this year's meet – the most ever by a Viking men's athlete at a single Big Sky Outdoor Championships.
Eight of Migani's 17 points came via a second-place finish in the triple jump. The second-place finish gave Migani the first All-Big Sky honors of his career, as well as the first by a Viking – male or female – since Chase Lovercheck placed second in the 800 meters at the 2022 Big Sky Outdoor Championships. Migani finished second behind a seasonal best of 49-05.75 (15.08m). The mark came on his third attempt of the day and held up from there to put Migani on the podium.
Migani now owns the two best marks in the outdoor triple jump at Portland State. Saturday's mark would have set a new school record in the event if not for Migani's own jump of 50-00.75 (15.25m) at last year's Big Sky Outdoor Championships.
Edward Niyongere also scored for the Vikings in the men's triple jump, placing sixth with a mark of 47-07.75 (14.52m). It was a clutch showing from Niyongere, as the mark came on his third attempt after back-to-back fouls to open the event put him at risk of not qualifying for the final.
Freshman
Jackson Mathers didn't qualify for the final but still produced a seasonal best of 45-05.00 (13.84m). It was the fourth straight meet at which Mathers has improved his mark in the triple jump.
Migani scored for the first time Saturday – after scoring four points with a fifth-place finish in the long jump Friday – in the final of the men's 100 meters. Running in the inside lane, Migani got out of the blocks well while finishing fourth in 10.62 seconds.
Daniel Coppedge made it a record-setting day for the Viking men before Migani did anything at Hornet Stadium Saturday. Coppedge broke his own school record in the men's hammer less than two months after initially setting it at the Oregon Preview on March 21 earlier this season. Improving on every attempt, Coppedge topped out at 188-09 (57.53m) on his sixth attempt, breaking the record and moving him up to fourth in the final standings.
Emma Stolte opened the scoring for the Viking women with a career-best showing in the 1,500 meters. Stolte went with the lead pack when the field split apart over the penultimate lap, finishing seventh in a new personal best of 4:28.21. Stolte's time marked a three-second improvement over her finish at the John Knight Twilight on April 11, which itself was a four-second improvement at the time. Stolte now ranks sixth all-time in the 1,500 meters at Portland State.
The strong showing caps a solid year for Stolte in the middle distances. She came into the conference meet with five heat wins this season, including sweeps of her 800- and 1,500-meter heats at both the Oregon Preview and OSU High Performance Meet.
The Viking women also picked up a point with an eighth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.
Sienna Rosario,
Ania Kapustka,
Irina López and
Ashley Peterson teamed up to finish in 4:06.74.
Out of the non-scorers for the Vikings,
Natalie Cunningham produced a collegiate best while placing 17th in the shot put. Cunningham threw 41-02.25 (12.25m) for her third straight improvement in the shot put over her last three meets of the season. Saturday's mark represented 9.5-inch improvement over the mark she set two weeks earlier at the OSU High Performance Meet.
The question after Saturday will be if Migani did enough to qualify for the NCAA West First Round, May 28-31, in College Station, Texas. His mark would have ranked him tied for 54th in the NCAA West Region based on results coming into the weekend. That's out of the top 48 automatic qualifying spots. Additionally, his mark of 15.08 meters is much shorter than the final qualifier a season ago, which was Idaho's Simone Fedle at 15.21 meters. But scratches over the next week could change his standing.
If he does make it, then you can bet he'll meet the moment. Just like he did Saturday.
