SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Dieumerci Migani set himself up for another big showing at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships Friday, advancing to the final in the 100 meters while scoring with a fifth-place finish in the long jump.
Â
It nearly matches his showing a year ago when Migani scored 11 points between the 100 meters, long jump and triple jump – the biggest individual scoring total by a Viking men's athlete since 2016.
Â
Migani added four points to his career total Friday at Hornet Stadium, as he placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 23-00.75 (7.03m). With 15 career points at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, Migani now ranks tied with Jordan Senn (2004-06) and Peter Jason Tait (2008-10) for ninth-most all-time at the meet. His 23 combined points between the Big Sky Indoor and Outdoor Championships leaves him just four points outside of the top 10 with Saturday's finals in the 100 meters and triple jump still to come.
Â
Migani advanced to the final of the 100 meters after tying his seasonal best with a finish in 10.59 seconds in the prelims. Migani placed second in his heat, but advanced to the final on time.
Â
Henry Glad joined Migani in scoring for the Viking men Friday, placing eighth in the javelin with a clutch throw on his sixth and final attempt. Glad jumped from out of scoring position to eighth in the standings with an eight-foot improvement, throwing 178-11 (54.54m) on his last go-around. The mark represented a new personal best by more than seven feet, bettering the mark Glad set at the Stanford Invitational on April 4 earlier this season.
Â
Glad leapfrogged teammate
Jackson Wurz for seventh in the freshman top 10 with the mark. Wurz placed 10th himself, throwing 162-08 (49.58m) for his second-best mark of the season.
Â
Ania Kapustka just missed out on scoring for the Viking women while placing ninth in the 3k steeplechase. Kapustka cracked 11 minutes in the event for the second time out of her three attempts this season, finishing in 10:57.68.
Â
No other Vikings scored or advanced out of Friday's prelims. Even still, a number of Vikings either set their best or second-best marks of the season.
Â
Out of that group,
Deghlan Johnson cracked 55 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles for the first time while narrowly missing out on a qualifying spot in Saturday's final. Johnson placed 10th in 54.66 seconds, nearly a half second faster than his previous best from the Oregon Preview on March 22 earlier this season. Johnson entered the all-time top 10 at Portland State with that mark, and while he didn't move up with Friday's improvement, he still ranks ninth all-time.
Â
Abdi Ibrahim entered the top 10 in the men's 10k with a 25-second personal best, placing 14th in Friday's final in 30:56.92. Ibrahim now ranks sixth all-time in the 10k, his sixth top 10 mark in an individual event at Portland State between cross country, indoor and outdoor track.
Â
Daniel Coppedge came within four feet of entering the top 10 in the men's discus while setting a personal best with a throw of 141-05 (43.11m).
Â
Natalie Cunningham added close to six feet to her collegiate best on the women's side of the discus. Cunningham threw 121-00 (36.88m) on her second of three attempts, bettering the previous best she set at the L&C Larry Byerly Invitational on April 19.
Â
Nick Moore (men's 1,500) and
Jackson Mathers (men's high jump) both set their second-best marks of the season in their respective events. Moore ran in the faster of the two prelim heats in the 1,500 meters, placing 16th overall in 3:57.90. That was just off his personal best of 3:57.10 from the Larry Byerly Invite. Mathers, meanwhile, placed 13th in the high jump with a clearance at 6-01.50 (1.87m), half an inch below his seasonal best of 6-02.00 (1.88m) from the OSU High Performance Meet.
Â
Amir Ahmed took a big swing in the prelims of the men's 800 meters. He sprinted to the front and held the lead through the first 500 meters but then got passed on the back stretch. Ahmed ended up 12th overall in 1:52.21, just off his personal best of 1:52.15 from the Brutus Hamilton Invitational on April 5.
Â
Edward Niyongere set a new seasonal best in the long jump, adding seven inches to his previous best while placing 11th with a mark of 21-10.75 (6.67m). Niyongere will return in the triple jump Saturday, an event in which he entered the meet ranked fifth in the Big Sky Conference.
Â
Migani will join Niyongere in the triple jump, just a few minutes after he runs in the finals of the 100 meters. And with the teammates pushing each other, perhaps we'll see more fireworks from the Vikings Saturday.
