Dieumerci Migani Sets No. 4 Time in 200 as Vikings Close Regular Season at Pac-12 Open

RESULTS

CORVALLIS, Ore. —
One thing Dieumerci Migani will not need to worry about at next week's Big Sky Outdoor Championships is speed. He's got that covered, as he displayed again Saturday as the Portland State track & field program closed out its regular season at the Pac-12 Open.

Migani shaved nearly a second off his personal best in the 200 meters while finishing in 21.46 seconds at the Whyte Track and Field Center. That moved Migani up to fourth all-time in the outdoor 200 meters, the eighth different individual event in which he ranks in the top 10 now at Portland State.

Dillon Brost set a seasonal best while running in the same section as Migani in the 200 meters. Brost finished in 22.24 seconds, shaving nearly a quarter of a second off the time he set just a week earlier at the OSU High Performance Meet. Brost's time moved him up to sixth in the freshman record book, one of two freshman top 10 marks he set on the day.

Besides the 200, Brost led a strong showing from the Vikings in the men's 100 meters. Three of the four Vikings in the event set seasonal bests, with Brost leading the way with a heat win and another freshman top 10 mark. Brost finished third overall in 11.00 seconds, jumping four spots into a tie for sixth in the freshman rankings. His finish marked a new seasonal best by 19-hundredths of a second, beating his season-opening time from the L&C Electric Forest Opener on March 8.

Ty Hawkins followed Brost in 11.10 seconds, tying the seasonal best he set initially at the John Knight Twilight meet on April 12. Phoenix Bakkum shaved a quarter of a second off his personal and seasonal best while finishing in 11.32 seconds.

Improvements were the theme of the day for the Vikings. The Vikings bettered 16 seasonal bests Saturday with nine of those also marking new personal bests. And while Migani and some others will take those improvements into next week's Big Sky meet, the new bests marked a positive end to the season for another group of Vikings who will not be competing at the conference meet.

That group includes several of the Vikings to set new freshman top 10 marks. Besides Brost, Aidan Sweeney also set a pair of freshman top 10 marks Saturday. In only his second meet back after an eight-week absence following the team's season opener, Sweeney shaved nearly half a second off his seasonal best in the 110-meter hurdles while placing third overall in 15.23 seconds. The time meant Sweeney leapfrogged teammate James Timmins for fifth in the freshman record book, one week after Timmins leapfrogged him with a finish in 15.51 seconds at the OSU High Performance Meet.

Sweeney also ran his first 400-meter hurdles race Saturday, finishing in 1:02.22 to debut at eighth in the freshman record book.

Mika Sarver Huber and Carter Green both bettered freshman top 10 marks they already had, putting positive finishes to their first years as Viks.

Sarver Huber and teammate Lyness Ota both set new personal bests in the men's 10k. Sarver Huber led the pair, finishing in 34:17.31, shaving 22 seconds off the time he ran three weeks earlier at the L&C Larry Byerly Invitational. Ota bettered his time from three weeks ago by 11 seconds, finishing in 34:38.38.

Green closed out his season in the throws, competing in the men's hammer and javelin Saturday. Green bettered his freshman top 10 mark in the hammer, cracking 100 feet for the first time with a throw of 102-02 (31.16m) on his opening attempt of the day. Green also posted his No. 2 mark in the javelin with a throw of 144-01 (43.92m).

Daniel Coppedge led the Vikings' throwers in the hammer, an event in which he holds the school record. Coppedge surpassed 180 feet for a fourth time this season, placing third overall with a throw of 181-01 (55.20m). Coppedge's better showing came in the discus where he set a new personal best with his throw of 136-09 (41.68m).

On the women's side, Sav Garcia bettered her prep best in the shot put while tying her seasonal best in the javelin. Garcia threw the shot put 33-02.50 (10.12m) to add more than eight feet to her prep best in the event. In the javelin, Garcia matched the seasonal best she set initially at the John Knight Twilight on April 11 with a throw of 99-05 (30.31m).

Elsewhere in the field, the Vikings got a strong showing from all three of their athletes in the men's long jump. Mason Becker led the trio with a third-place finish after jumping 22-05.75 (6.85m). That represented Becker's second-best mark of the season, as well as his third podium finish in as many appearances during the outdoor season.

Hawkins added a second straight personal best in the long jump to go with his seasonal best in the 100 meters. Hawkins jumped 21-11.50 (6.69m) to place fifth in the event, adding just over eight inches to the mark he set a week earlier in the same facility at the OSU High Performance Meet.

Hawkins also ran the anchor leg of the Vikings' 4x100-meter relay, joining Braden Latscha, Migani and Brost. The foursome finished in 42.11 seconds, four-tenths of a second better than their time a week earlier. The foursome's seasonal best remains 41.86 seconds from the L&C Larry Byerly Invitational on April 19, though they ran in a different order at that meet with Migani taking the anchor leg.

Edward Niyongere was the third Viking to compete in the men's long jump, setting a seasonal best by five inches with his mark of 21-03.50 (6.49m). Niyongere's better event came in the triple jump where he placed third with a mark of 47-04.50 (14.44m). That wasn't better than the personal best he set at 48-00.75 (14.65m) a week earlier at the OSU High Performance Meet – which moved him up to fifth all-time in the event – but it still marked his second-best mark ever outdoors in the event.

Elsewhere, Taylor Nichols bettered her personal and seasonal best in the women's 1,500 meters while leading a group of four Vikings in the event. Nichols finished in 4:44.92, nearly a second better than the time she set three weeks earlier at the L&C Larry Byerly Invitational.

Kyle Chen set a seasonal best on the men's side of the 1,500 meters, finishing in 4:23.96.

Two final seasonal bests came from one name. One first name, at least, as Aida Wheat and Aida Coté bettered their previous bests in the women's 100 and 400 meters, respectively. Wheat shaved five-hundredths of a second off her previous best in the 100 with her finish in 12.51 seconds. Coté, meanwhile, bettered her previous best by more than half a second while finishing in 1:04.12.

Those improvements should help both athletes lead into their sophomore seasons. It's nice to know you have the speed in your back packet.

Migani, and a number of other Vikings, know they have that heading into next week's Big Sky Outdoor Championships, May 14-17, in Sacramento, Calif.
