MONMOUTH, Ore. — The Portland State track & field program gave the 101 Dalmatians something to bark about at the John Knight Twilight meet.
Ania Kapustka and
Emma Stolte produced a pair of top 10 marks Friday night at McArthur Field, giving Pongo and Perdita something two share at the Twilight Bark.
Â
Kapustka, running her first 3,000-meter steeplechase ever, took the lead three laps into her race and didn't look back from there, cruising to a 13-second win in 11:07.79. Kapustka's time moved her up to sixth all-time in the event, giving Kapustka her third individual top 10 mark as a Viking.
Â
Stolte, meanwhile, posted a four-second personal best of 4:31.56 while placing second overall in the women's 1,500 meters. She moved up to ninth all-time in the 1,500 meters with the big personal best.
Â
Stolte had been undefeated at the 1,500 meters coming into Friday. She posted an overall win at the L&C Electric Forest Opener on March 8, then followed with a heat win at the Oregon Preview on March 21. Friday, she couldn't catch George Fox's Ellie Rising, who led from the front throughout, but Stolte still ran the fastest final lap of anyone in the field which helped push her to the big personal best.
Â
Seven other Vikings set personal bests between the women's and men's 1,500 meters besides Stolte. On the women's side,
Addison Capozzi and
Viola Alessandrini finished second and third in their heat while setting personal bests of 4:58.13 and 4:58.56, respectively. Capozzi's personal best came by more than four seconds, while Alessandrini's was by just under eight seconds.
Emily Schmitke, Alessandrini's freshman classmate, set a personal best by close to three seconds with her finish in 5:09.50.
Â
Amir Ahmed led the Vikings on the men's side of the 1,500 meters. Normally an 800-meter runner, Ahmed shaved close to four and a half seconds off his 1,500-meter best while finishing in 4:00.65. Ahmed's new mark came in a heat win for the Viking sophomore, as he beat Pacific's Peyton Fisher by more than three seconds. Freshmen
Mika Sarver Huber and
Aidan Brown followed in 4:17.95 and 4:23.75, setting personal best by eight and 17 seconds, respectively. Brown's personal best came in another heat win for the Vikings, as he beat Lane CC's Charlie Page by just under three seconds.
Lyness Ota dipped just under his old best by half a second while finishing in 4:29.61.
Â
Elsewhere,
Ashley Peterson added another heat win for the Vikings in the women's 400-meter hurdles. Peterson beat Willamette's Katie Briggs by more than a second while shaving 16-hundredths of a second off her personal best with her finish in 1:07.34.
Â
James Timmins didn't better the mark he set at the Oregon Preview on March 22, but still posted a third-place overall finish for the Vikings on the men's side of the 400-meter hurdles. Timmins finished in 56.19 seconds for his second-best mark of the season.
Â
The Vikings' throwers produced two freshman top 10 marks Friday.
Carter Green added more than six feet to his best in the hammer with a throw of 96-00 (29.27m). Green remained sixth in the freshman record book but moved closer to the others with the mark.
Â
Green's improvement in the hammer helped make up for losing one of his other freshman top 10s, as classmate
Jackson Wurz supplanted him at 10th in the men's javelin. Wurz posted a personal best of 150-07 (45.90m) in the event, adding more than seven feet to his previous best from the Rich Allen Classic on March 8.
Â
Daniel Coppedge and
Henry Glad led the Vikings overall in the men's hammer and men's javelin, respectively. Coppedge, who broke a 54-year-old school record in the hammer at the Oregon Preview on March 21, posted his second-best mark of the season with a throw of 183-10 (56.05m) to place third overall. Glad, meanwhile, posted a best throw of 158-00 (48.17m) to place 19th in the men's javelin.
Â
The Vikings continue at the John Knight Twilight Saturday, starting with the men's and women's long jump at 10 a.m.
