RESULTS - L&C Electric Forest Open | Rich Allen Classic
PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland State track & field program re-introduced itself to the outdoors in a big way Saturday between two local meets, the L&C Electric Forest Opener at Lewis & Clark College and the Rich Allen Classic at George Fox University.
Â
The Vikings won eight events at the L&C Electric Forest Opener while setting 13 new marks in the freshman record book between both meets.
Â
The bulk of the team went to the L&C Electric Forest Opener where the Vikings stacked victory after victory. The program's eight wins were split evenly between the men and women. The Viking men won in the men's 800 meters, 5,000 meters, 4x400-meter relay and high jump. The Viking women, meanwhile, won in the 100, 200, 400 and 1,500 meters.
Â
All four events that the Viking women won featured a wave of Vikings at the top of the standings. The Vikings swept the podium in the 100 meters, finished first and second in the 200 meters, first and third in the 400 meters, and first, third and fourth in the 1,500 meters.
Â
The 1-2-3 finish in the 100 meters featured
Tori Forst,
Aida Wheat and
Sienna Rosario claiming the top three spots for the Vikings. Forst won in 12.14 seconds while Wheat and Rosario finished close to each other in 12.56 and 12.58 seconds, respectively. Wheat's time moved her up to 10th in the freshman record book in the women's 100 meters.
Â
Wheat and Rosario finished 1-2 in the 200 meters later in the day. Wheat won the event in 25.62 seconds, while Rosario followed in 26.35 seconds.
Â
Ashley Peterson may have pulled off the most impressive win of the day in the women's 400 meters. She won in 57.58 seconds, more than a second ahead of the No. 2 finisher – University of Portland's Teresa Perez in 58.61 seconds – and well ahead of teammate
Wendy Hare, who finished third in 59.21 seconds.
Â
Peterson came within two-tenths of a second of bettering the current No. 10 time in the 400 meters, which Melissa Owens set at 57.39 seconds in 2007. Peterson would become the first athlete to enter the top 10 in the women's 400 meters since Rachel Vinjamuri and Roazena Miller in 2016.
Â
Emma Stolte provided the first win of the day for the Viking women in the 1,500 meters. She finished in 4:35.64, close to nine seconds ahead of the No. 2 finisher, University of Portland's Jane Roloff in 4:44.41. Stolte set a new personal best by more than 15 seconds in winning the event Saturday.
Â
Teammates
Ania Kapustka and
Taylor Nichols finished third and fourth, respectively, in 4:46.02 and 4:48.17. Kapustka's time represented a 22-second improvement from her mark at the same meet last season.
Â
The first win for the Viking men came in the high jump where
Jackson Mathers tied Clackamas CC's Aidan Farr for the win with a clearance at 5-09.75 (1.77m). Mathers moved into a tie for ninth in the freshman record book with the win. He also set a freshman mark in the triple jump, posting a best jump of 42-11.75 (13.10m) to move up to sixth among first-year Vikings.
Riley Sharps set the No. 10 freshman mark in the triple jump with a jump of 41-08.75 (12.72m).
Â
Amir Ahmed provided the first win on the track for the Viking men. Ahmed finished in 1:52.99 to beat Patrik Balazs by more than a second. Ahmed's time represented a personal best by six-tenths of a second. He needs to shave only .35 seconds more to match the current No. 10 in the men's 800 meters, which PSU Hall of Famer Dave Robbins set at 1:52.64 in 1968.
Â
Abdi Ibrahim recorded the largest margin of victory in any event for the Vikings with a win in the men's 5k. Ibrahim finished in 14:36.20, nearly 35 seconds ahead of the University of Portland's Collin Penuel, who finished in 15:10.27. It wasn't a personal best for Ibrahim, but it was 20 seconds faster than his last outdoor opener in the 5k back win 2023.
Â
The final win of the day came from the men's 4x400-meter relay where the Vikings edged Clark College by half a second with their finish in 3:24.81.
Tommie Olubisi,
Phoenix Bakkum,
James Timmins and
Dillon Brost combined for the win.
Â
While the majority of the Vikings were busy winning events at Lewis & Clark, the team's throwers made their mark at the Rich Allen Classic.
Â
Noah Meucci led the way, setting the No. 2 overall mark in the hammer with a personal-best throw of 168-02 (51.27m). Meucci added close to 12 feet to his previous best in the hammer. He now trails only Steve James in the event. James set the current school record 54 years ago with a mark of 176-00 (53.64m).
Â
The Vikings also got five freshman records out of their throwers between
Carter Green (hammer, javelin),
Jackson Wurz (shot put, discus) and
Henry Glad (javelin).
Â
Natalie Cunningham was the lone thrower for the Viking women at the Rich Allen Classic. She responded with a second-place finish in the shot put, posting a PSU best of 38-11.50 (11.87m).
Â
The Vikings will take next weekend off from competition before returning for the Oregon Preview, March 21-22, at Hayward Field in Eugene.
