OPPONENT NOTES
  • Montana: The Griz enter Thursday atop the Big Sky standings, aiming for a win in Hillsboro to clinch their third consecutive regular-season title. With 14 points and a 4-1-2 record in conference play, they are one of just two teams to have secured a postseason berth ahead of the final week of the regular season. Montana is riding a six-match unbeaten streak, highlighted by three consecutive victories. Their most recent—and only—conference loss came on Sept. 26 at Northern Arizona. Defensively, the Griz have been impressive all season, recording 10 shutouts, including three in a row. They've allowed just three goals in seven Big Sky matches, outscoring opponents 10-3.
  • Sacramento State: The Hornets enter the final week of the regular season in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Big Sky, holding seven points with a 2-4-1 conference record. They're aiming to snap a three-match losing streak, during which they've been outscored 10-0 by Idaho State, Weber State, and Montana. Their two Big Sky wins came against Northern Colorado (Sept. 25) and Eastern Washington (Oct. 5). Defensively, Sacramento State has struggled, conceding 32 goals this season—an average of 1.88 per match—the highest in the conference. Offensively, the Hornets are led by midfielder Tea Reyes and forward Lexi Schroeder, who have each scored three goals this season.
SERIES HISTORY VS. THE GRIZ
  • The Vikings trail the all-time series against Montana, 13-18-4, but hold a 6-6-1 record in home matches against the Grizzlies.
  • PSU has recorded just one win over Montana since 2016 — a 1-0 victory on September 25, 2022, in their last meeting in Hillsboro.
  • The Vikings are aiming to snap a three-game losing streak against the Griz, with defeats of 3-0 (Big Sky quarterfinals, 2022), 1-0 (2023), and 1-0 (2021) in the last three matchups.
SERIES HISTORY VS. THE HORNETS
  • The Vikings trail the all-time series against Sacramento State, 12-16-4, with a 5-7-1 record in matches played in Sacramento.
  • PSU is looking to extend a two-match road win streak over the Hornets, having earned 1-0 victories in Sacramento in both 2024 and 2018.
  • Prior to their home loss to the Hornets in 2024, the Vikings had a three-year unbeaten run against Sacramento State, going 2-0-1 from 2021 to 2023.
  • Just three total goals have been scored across the last three meetings between the teams.

BIG SKY STANDINGS

  • There's still plenty to be decided in the final week of Big Sky play, with only two teams — Montana and Weber State — having clinched spots in the Big Sky Tournament, set for Nov. 5–9 in Missoula, Mont. The top six teams in the final regular season standings will qualify for the tournament.
  • The Vikings are currently tied with Idaho State for fourth place with eight points, sitting just one point behind third-place Idaho (9) and one point ahead of Eastern Washington, Northern Colorado, and Sacramento State, who each have seven points.

VIKING SENIOR DAY

  • Eight Vikings will be honored as part of the senior ceremony on Thursday: Liv Frazier, Elle Frazier, Kalo Iongi, Ocean Rideout, Mari Mendoza, Camilla Contreras-Bran, Natalie Cunningham, and Parker Reichner.
  • Seven of the eight began their careers at Portland State in 2022; Parker Reichner joined the program in 2021.
  • Together, they've helped elevate the program, making three consecutive appearances in the conference championship tournament, including two semifinal runs. With eight wins in 2023, they contributed to the Vikings' most successful season since 2014.

LAST TIME OUT – VS. EASTERN WASHINGTON / IDAHO

  • The Vikings hosted conference opponents Eastern Washington and Idaho last week, falling to the Eagles 1-0 and tying the Vandals 1-1.
  • On Thursday (10/16), PSU nearly secured a scoreless draw against Eastern Washington but conceded a goal in the 87th minute, falling 1-0 at Hillsboro Stadium.
  • On Sunday (10/19), Idaho struck early with a goal less than three minutes into the match. Ocean Rideout leveled the score in the 62nd minute with a penalty kick.
  • After the Vandals' early goal, the Viking defense locked in, holding Idaho scoreless for the remainder of the match and limiting the Vandals to just one shot attempt in the second half.
KEY CONTRIBUTORS
  • Senior forward Ocean Rideout leads the Vikings offensively with seven points (3 goals, 1 assist), three of those points coming in conference action
  • Sophomore forward Aliayha Saldana leads the team with 32 shots, including 14 on target, and ranks sixth in the Big Sky in shots per game during conference play, averaging 2.83
  • Rideout and Saldana have combined for 32 shots across six Big Sky games, accounting for nearly 50% of the team's total against conference opponents.
  • Freshman midfielder Bianca Potesta is the only Viking with multiple assists this season, recording the first of her career against Western Oregon (Aug. 24) and her second at Southern Utah (Sept. 21). She ranks third on the team with four points this season.
CUNNINGHAM iN COMMAND
  • Redshirt junior goalkeeper Natalie Cunningham has been solid in Big Sky play, allowing only four goals in six matches, with two shutouts.
  • She leads the conference in save percentage during league play (.882), ranks second in saves per game (5.00), and owns the second-best goals against average (0.67)
  • Cunningham delivered a season-best performance against CSUN on Sept. 4, matching her career high with 10 saves.
  • She currently ranks third all-time in program history for career saves per game, averaging 4.85 across 27 appearances and 26 starts.
  • Her career totals include a 9-13-5 record, four shutouts, a 1.39 goals against average, and a .784 save percentage.

ANCHORING THE BACK LINE

  • Senior defenders Liv Frazier and Kalo Iongi have been a consistent presence on the Vikings' back line throughout their four-year careers at Portland State.
  • Frazier, a First Team All-Big Sky selection in 2024, has appeared in 58 career matches with 44 starts, totaling 4,342 minutes.
  • Iongi has played in 66 career matches, starting 47, and has logged 4,917 total minutes — the most among all active Vikings.
  • A Second Team All-Big Sky honoree in 2024, Iongi has also contributed offensively with two goals, one assist, and 78 total shots.
O SO CLUTCH
  • Senior forward Ocean Rideout has established herself as one of the most clutch players in program history, with 6-of-9 career goals (67%) scored in the final 12 minutes of play.
  • Prior to her most recent penalty kick goal against Idaho — Rideout's previous 5 goals, from sophomore year to present, all occured in the final 10 minutes, including two game-winning goals in the 89th minute.
  • Rideout has scored in each of her four seasons at PSU, totaling 20 career points (9 goals, 2 assists). All 9 of her goals have been scored at Hillsboro Stadium.
  • 7 of her 9 career goals (78%) have come when PSU was tied or trailing, leading to four game-winners and three equalizers.
SECOND-HALF SUCCESS
  • Aside from Rideout's late-match heroics, the Vikings have consistently been a second-half team—scoring 31 of their 40 goals (78%) in the second half across the 2023 and 2024 seasons, including 11 of 13 goals (85%) in 2024.
  • They've been especially dangerous late in games, with the game-winning goal scored in the final 30 minutes in 10 of their last 15 victories.
  • The second-half scoring trend carried into 2025, as four of PSU's first five goals of the year came after halftime (80%).
  • However, the Vikings have flipped the script recently, scoring five of their last six goals in the first half.
WHITNEY AT THE HELM
  • Viking Head Coach Maureen Whitney is in her ninth season with the Vikings, but 2025 marks her first year as the program's solo head coach.
  • She joined the Portland State program in 2017 as an assistant coach under former Head Coach Katie Burton. After just one season, Whitney was promoted to Associate Head Coach prior to the 2018 campaign — a role she held for six seasons.
  • Ahead of the 2024 season, she was elevated to co-head coach, sharing leadership duties with Burton.
  • In January 2025, she assumed full leadership of the program, becoming the ninth head coach in Portland State history.
  • During her time at PSU, Whitney has helped guide the Vikings to five Big Sky Conference Tournament appearances, including three semifinal finishes (2017, 2023, 2024).
  • Thursday's match against Weber State will be her first Big Sky match as solo head coach
