FARMINGTON, Utah — The Portland State women's soccer team was picked fourth in the 2024 Big Sky Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the conference on Monday. The poll results were determined by votes from the league's head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own teams.
The Vikings secured their fourth-place ranking following consecutive third-place finishes in the regular seasons of 2022 and 2023. Last year, the team posted an overall record of 8-8-2, including a 4-2-2 mark in Big Sky play, advancing to the conference tournament semifinals.
In this year's poll, the Vikings garnered 37 points, edging out fifth-place Sacramento State by a single point.
Montana, last season's regular-season champion, topped the poll with 56 points. Northern Arizona was predicted to finish second with 51 points, while Idaho claimed the third spot with 47 points. The nine first-place votes were distributed among Montana (5), Idaho (2), Northern Arizona (1), and Northern Colorado (1).
Viking Co-Head Coaches Katie Burton and Maureen Whitney will guide a 31-player roster this season, featuring 20 returners from last year's squad. The team will also welcome three transfers and eight freshmen making their debuts in Viking uniforms.
Portland State kicks off its 2024 season on Friday, August 16th, with an away match at Boise State, starting at 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT. The Vikings will wrap up their opening weekend at the University of Oregon on Sunday, August 18th, at 1:00 p.m. PT in Eugene.
