Box Score LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Portland State men's tennis team concluded their series of matches in Southern California on Wednesday, falling 5-2 to UC San Diego at the Northview Tennis Courts.
The dual was the final non-conference match of the regular season for the Vikings as they dropped to 5-11 overall. The Tritons improved to 7-13 as they secured their fourth consecutive win at home.
The Vikings used solid doubles play to take an early lead, clinching the point with wins at lines two and three. Following a Triton win on the top court,
Hembo Mathiasen and
Jan Semerak notched their second victory of the year at No. 2, defeating William Lan and Daniel Traxler 6-2.
Andrin Zuellig and
Kristian Peev followed suit in their first match as a duo on court three, surging past Jett Cole and Eric Silberman with a 6-4 victory.
Portland State was unable to hold onto its lead in singles action as the Tritons completed four straight-set victories to clinch the dual. Semerak posted the only singles win of the afternoon for the Vikings, overcoming a first-set loss at line two to beat Djogo Tinoco 5-7, 6-4, 2-6.
Andrea Brignacca nearly pulled out his third consecutive win but fell to Pelayo Rodriguez in a super tiebreak 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (4).
The Vikings will get a two-day break in action before returning to play against Sacramento State this Saturday, April 6th at the Sac State Tennis Courts (1:00 p.m.).
