SEATTLE, Wash. — Portland State doubles partners
Maas Schotanus and
Aarjun Pandit are championship bound after upsetting Santa Clara's Luca Bluett and Adam Farag-Cao in the semifinals Monday at the ITA Northwest Regional.
Â
Schotanus and Pandit continued an unprecedented run with the win. They were already believed to be the first Portland State team to make the semifinals at a tournament that sees the Vikings compete against the best singles and doubles teams in the region. Their championship appearance gives the Vikings a chance to win their first-ever title – singles or doubles – at the ITA Northwest Regional.
Â
They advanced to the final with a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-7 win over Bluett and Farag-Cao. The semifinal stage didn't seem to faze them. At 3-3 in the first set, Pandit saved three straight break points to keep the Vikings in front. They broke Santa Clara's serve in the very next game, then served out the opening set from there.
Â
Schotanus and Pandit broke for a 4-3 lead in the second set but then gave the break back right away. They recovered to save set points at 4-5 and in the tiebreaker, but the match eventually went to a 10-point tiebreaker. Schotanus and Pandit took control early in the match tiebreaker, winning six of the first seven points and then held on from there.
Â
There was an upset in the other doubles semifinals Monday. Washington's Soham Purohit and Jan Chlodnicki knocked out top-seeded Nicholas Godsick and Hudson Rivera from Stanford, winning in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Â
Schotanus and Pandit will face off against Purohit and Chlodnicki in the championship at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The winner earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Individual Championships, Nov. 17-22, in Athens, Georgia.
Â
That would be uncharted territory for the Vikings, but they've been in uncharted territory since Sunday. What's another couple of days or weeks.
