SEATTLE, Wash. — Portland State men's tennis players Maas Schotanus and Aarjun Pandit's unprecedented run to the championship match of the ITA Northwest Regional didn't get the dream finish the Vikings wanted. An ill-timed injury limited the pair in Tuesday's final, as they were forced to retire down 6-2, 4-0 to Washington's Soham Purhoit and Jan Chlodnicki.

While the run ended on a sour note, Schotanus and Pandit became the first Portland State team to ever qualify for the semifinals or final at the ITA Northwest Regional. Their placement in the final could also extend their fall season. They are now potential qualifiers for the ITA West Sectional, which will take place Nov. 5-8 in Tempe, Ariz. Final qualifiers for the ITA West Sectional will be announced closer to the start of the tournament.

Schotanus and Pandit won three matches to make it to the final. Their journey started with an 8-4 upset of fourth-seeded Melchior Delloye and Andrea Meduri from Cal. They followed with an 8-5 win over Oregon's Dan Hughes and Declan Galligan in the quarterfinals, then produced another upset of a seeded team in the semifinals when they beat fifth-seeded Luca Bluett and Adam Farag-Cao of Santa Clara, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-7.

While they await a potential berth into the ITA Northwest Regional, the Vikings will head to the Duck Invite in Eugene this weekend, Oct. 23-25.
