SEATTLE, Wash. – The Portland State Vikings showed out on day one of the ITA Northwest Regional Championship. The team went 4-5 on the day, just barely ducking under .500, but that is not to say that the Vikings played poorly at all. In fact, it was quite the opposite. At this tournament, PSU faces some of the toughest competition they'll see all season long, but the lights shined bright, and the Viks shined brighter.
Junior
Vit Petcov, who arrived at Portland State in the fall after an All-American season with NCAA Division III University of Redlands, is starting the season off with a bang. He won two matches to play his way into the main draw. His first match ended with Petcov taking down University of the Pacific's Adi Dagan in two sets, 6-3, 6-4. He then upset ninth-seeded Nicholas Bowles of Sacramento State in an absolute dogfight. They went back and forth, Petcov took the first set 6-3, then Bowles edged out a close second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (2). Petcov took control in the last set where he handled Bowles with a 6-1 win, sealing his spot in the main draw's round of 64 tomorrow.
Junior
Luca Prino will join Petcov in the main draw tomorrow after a dramatic two-set victory, 6-4, 7-6 (3), against Sacramento State's Alexander Simone.
Edoardo Cravanzola gave himself a chance to join Prino and Petcov in the main draw. He upset University of Portland's Gian Manhas, 6-4, 6-3, and then played extremely well against the fifth-seeded player in the tournament, Gonzaga's Nicholas Reeves, before ultimately being defeated in two sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Freshman
Kawelo Tsuneyoshi won the opening set of his match against Saint Mary's Devin Stuppin, 6-4, before dropping the next two, 6-0, 6-2.
Senior
Hampus Hagglund is entering his second season with PSU, and made a strong effort in his match against Samuel Bautista of Pacific. Hagglund leveled the match at a set apiece by winning the second, 6-3, but then lost a tight third set, 7-5.
The Portland State men's tennis team resumes play tomorrow, where all-conference sophomore
Aarjun Pandit takes on Stanford's Mark Krupkin in the main draw, as well as Prino and Vitcov who look to progress deeper into the tournament. The doubles bracket picks up tomorrow as well, where the All-Big Sky honorable mention duo of Pandit and
Maas Schotanus go up against Oregon's duo of Cameron Burton and Matthew Burton.
