Vikings Set to Face Eastern Washington in Big Sky Tournament Opener Wednesday

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State women's soccer team heads to Missoula, Mont., this week for its third consecutive Big Sky Tournament appearance after finishing sixth in the regular season standings. The Vikings will take on third-seeded Eastern Washington in the tournament's opening match on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 10 a.m. PT / 11 a.m. MT at South Campus Stadium.

Six teams will vie for the trophy in Missoula this week, with quarterfinals on Wednesday, semifinals on Friday, and the championship match set for Sunday. All five matches will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and live stats will also be available.

EAGLE NOTES: The Eagles exceeded all expectations this season, finishing last in the standings last year and being picked eighth in the Big Sky Preseason Coaches Poll. They completed the regular season in third place after going 4-1-3 in conference play, suffering their only conference loss of the season at Northern Arizona on Oct. 10. Offensively, they enter Wednesday's matchup on a three-game win streak, having secured consecutive victories over Idaho State, Weber State, and Northern Colorado. The Eagles rank second in the conference with 32 goals scored and 15.17 shots per game. They are led by Chloe Pattison, the Big Sky's leading scorer, who enters the postseason with 25 points and 11 goals.

  • Despite five regular-season titles, the Vikings have never won a Big Sky Tournament championship, finishing as runner-up in 2002 and 2013
  • This will be their fifth trip and third consecutive tournament under coaches Katie Burton and Maureen Whitney, who have a 2-2-0 postseason record at the helm

LAST TIME OUT - VS SACRAMENTO STATE
The Vikings wrapped up the regular season at home two weeks ago, hosting Sacramento State, who was also in fourth place, at Hillsboro Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 27. The Hornets secured a 1-0 victory, shutting out the Vikings while securing the win with a goal just 49 seconds into the match.The Hornets ended the Vikings' 11-match streak without a home conference loss, marking their first defeat at home since Oct. 24, 2021.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
  • The Vikings finished the regular season with a 2-3-3 home record, going 1-1-2 against Big Sky foes at Hillsboro Stadium
  • Three of the Vikings' four shutouts in 2024 occurred at Hillsboro Stadium, where they went 2-0-1 when keeping opponents scoreless
  • The Vikings conceded only seven goals across eight home games, representing only 37% of their 19 total goals allowed this season
EDEN IS ELITE
  • Graduate goalkeeper Eden Millan was exceptional for the Vikings in conference play, posting three consecutive shutouts against Idaho State, Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona
  • The shutout streak spanned 439-minutes, the third longest in program history, which began after a second-minute goal by Weber State on Oct. 4 and ended in the 84th minute against Montana on Sunday, Oct. 20 following three complete shutouts
  • Millan earned her first career Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week honor on Oct. 15th following the Vikings' 1-0 shutout over Northern Colorado on Oct. 10, where she made 10 saves—just two shy of her career-high
  • Millan leads the Big Sky with an average of 5.58 saves per game, totaling 67 saves this season. Her .848 save percentage and 1.04 goals-against average both rank second in the conference
  • Nationally, Millan ranks 24th in save percentage (.848) and 26th in saves per game (5.58)
ELLE-EVATING THE OFFENSE
  • Junior forward/midfielder Elle Frazier led the team with five goals during the regular season, two of those being game-winners 
  • Frazier was responsible for three of only four goals scored by the Vikings in conference action, scoring the equalizer in draws against Eastern Washington (T, 1-1) and Weber State (T, 1-1) before scoring the game-winning goal on the road at NAU
  • Entering the postseason, she is tied for fourth in the Big Sky with five total goals
SHOT LEADER
  • Freshman forward Aliayha Saldana led the conference with 2.88 shots per game, recording 46 total over 16 games
  • She was the Vikings' leading shooter in all but two conference matches, accumulating 30 shots over eight matches, with 12 on-target
  • Her career-high eight shots against Idaho State on Oct. 6 marked the highest single-game shot total by a Viking since 2016
  • Additionally, she ranks third on the team in points, with a total of six from two goals and two assists this season
SECOND-HALF SUCCESS
  • 82% of the Vikings' 2024 goals have been scored in the 2nd half
    • PSU has netted 9-of-11 goals in the second half this season
    •  Both first-half goals were scored by Elle Frazier inside of the four-minute mark
  • 76% of PSU's goals since 2022 have come in the 2nd half
    • Between the 2023 and 2024 seasons, the Vikings have scored 29-of-38 goals in the second half (20-of-27 in 2023; 9-of-11 in 2024)
  • 67% of PSU's wins since the 2022 season have been won with game-winners in the final 30 minutes
    • 6-of-8 wins in 2023 and 2-of-4 wins in 2024
    • Junior forward Ocean Rideout leads the team with three game-winning goals during her career, tied for the most among current Vikings. Four out of six of her career goals have been scored with less than 12 minutes remaining in the game

LOTS OF LIV
  • Junior defender Liv Frazier has played every minute of action this season, totaling 1,440 minutes on the Vikings' back line
  • She has logged a full 90 minutes in 29 consecutive games since Sept. 10, 2022, extending her streak to 2,340 minutes
  • Frazier has also started 31 straight games for the Vikings, a streak that began her freshman season on Aug. 27, 2022
SOLID DEFENSE
  • The Vikings conceded just 19 goals this season, achieving a goals-against average of 1.19, the best for the program since 2014.
  • They surrendered only three goals in their last six matches, finishing with a record of 2-2-2 during that stretch.
  • Against conference opponents, they allowed seven goals but had only one multi-goal game, which was a 3-0 loss to Idaho on Sept. 29
STARTING STREAKS
Four veteran Vikings have started over 20 consecutive games for Portland State: ALL ABOUT ABI 
  • Senior Abi Hoffman ranks second on the team with nine points, totaling three goals and three assists during the regular season
  • Her 38 shots and 19 shots on goal rank second on the team while her 2.38 shots per game ranks sixth in the Big Sky
  • Two of her three goals this season came in the second half against South Dakota (9/8), fueling the Vikings' thrilling comeback in the 51st and 69th minutes. She also set a career-high with seven shots, including four on goal, in that match
  • Her brace at South Dakota was the third brace of her career meaning she has now scored either a brace or a hat trick in each of her four seasons at PSU
ABI HOFFMAN'S CAREER RECORD WATCH
  • Points: 45 (2nd All-Time; record is 57)
  • Goals: 17 (T-2nd All-Time; record is 23)
  • Assists: 11 (T-4th All-Time; record is 16)

MIGHTY MIDFIELD 
  • 2023 Honorable Mention All-Big Sky midfielder, Abi Hoffman, returns to the Vikings' midfield for her senior season. She tallied 18 points (6 goals, 6 assists) in 2023 which ranked second in the Big Sky, while her four assists during BSC play led the conference. She also compiled a team-high 48 shots, putting 20 on target. 
  • Fellow senior Lucy Quinn, a 2022 Honorable Mention All-Big Sky midfielder joins Hoffman in the midfield this season. Quinn has started 46 of her last 47 matches and recorded three goals with two assists over the past three seasons.
  • Fifth-year senior Sydney Watson rounds out the experienced group after starting all 18 matches last season, logging 1,424 minutes of action in the midfield. So far, Watson has played all but 11 minutes in 2024.
CAREER FIRSTS 
  • Liv Frazier (Jr., D) - notched her first career assist against Northern Colorado (10/12), feeding a free kick to Abi Hoffman in the 55th minute 
  • Grace Sarabia (Fr., MF/D) -  earned her first career assist in the Big Sky opener last Friday, delivering a long ball to Elle Frazier for the Vikings only goal of the day 
  • Elle Frazier (Jr., F) -  scored the fourth goal of her career in the 78th minute at South Dakota to secure the win (9/8), marking her first career game-winning goal
  • Sydney Watson (Sr., MF) - assisted Abi Hoffman's first goal against South Dakota (9/8), recording her first career assist
  • Aliayha Saldana (Fr., F) -  scored the Vikings' first goal of the season in the opener at Boise State (8/16), marking the first goal of her collegiate career. On Sunday at South Dakota (9/8), she assisted Frazier's game-winner, marking her first collegiate assist
  • Kainani Jacang (So., D) - recorded her first career assist on Saldana's goal in the season opener at Boise State (8/16)
2024 VIKING ROSTER BREAKDOWN 
  • The Vikings return 20 players from their 2023 roster
  • They welcome 11 newcomers, including eight true freshmen and three transfers

2024 PORTLAND STATE COACHING STAFF 
In a notable shift this off-season, former Associate Head Coach Maureen Whitney was promoted to Co-Head Coach by Katie Burton, who previously held the position alone. Whitney joined Portland State as an assistant coach in 2017, was elevated to Associate Head Coach the following year, and now steps into the co-head coach role alongside Burton. Both coaches are in their eighth season at PSU this fall. Additionally, Lindsay LaMont, a former Oregon State goalkeeper and Viking assistant coach from the 2022 season, returns to the staff as a full-time assistant, working primarily with the goalkeepers.
