PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland State men's tennis head coach Vetu Mam announced the signings of Hayden Elliott and Hubert Theriault on Tuesday. Both players will join the Vikings this fall, ahead of the 2023-24 season.
Elliott, a freshman from Albany, Ore., will join the Vikings as the lone American on Mam's squad. A letter winner at West Albany High School, Elliott led the Bulldogs to two district championships. As a senior in 2023, he dominated the Mid-Willamette Conference district tournament, taking home the singles title before falling in the semifinals of the OSAA 5A State tournament.
"I've known Hayden for a while now as my brother coached him growing up and he's just a great guy that'll fit in well with the team," Mam said. "He's a good player with a lot of upside to his game. Coming in as a freshman, I know the guys are going to have fun showing him the ropes."
With two years of eligibility remaining, Theriault will come to Portland after two seasons at Thomas Jefferson University. A two-time CACC champion and first team all-conference selection at Jefferson, Theriault was named both Freshman and Player of the Year in 2022. The Quebec native posted 26 singles and 27 doubles wins in his two-year career while going 21-11 at the number one singles spot.Â
"Hubert is going to be an exciting addition to the team," Mam said. "We have a deep lineup already, but he's a player that's going to come in and contribute right away. He's coming in as a transfer so he's going to bring that experience to the table that most transfers do in terms of professionalism and leadership qualities. Most importantly, just like my other guys, he's got amazing character."
Elliott and Theriault will join six Viking returners this fall. Mam's group will look to improve on their recent seven-win season beginning in January 2024.Â
