EUGENE, Ore. — Four Vikings competed at the Oregon Preview Saturday. Two of them came away with school records while a third would have set a school record if not for one of the other two.
That's a 50-percent success rate for the Vikings on school records. Every coach in the NCAA would take that success rate, as the Vikings created some Hayward Field magic for themselves Saturday at the legendary track venue.
Gabrielle Bartlett set the first school record of the day in the women's pole vault. It was a bit of real-time redemption for Bartlett as she missed on three attempts at the school record a day earlier at the L&C Spring Break Open. The bar that time was at the same height she cleared Saturday – 11-03.75 (3.45m) – but this time she cleared it on her first attempt. Bartlett is still only in her first week competing for the Vikings outdoors, and yet she now has a school record to her name after Saturday.
But whereas Bartlett's record came by only three-quarters of an inch,
Tatum Miller completely smashed the previous record in her event, the women's 2k steeplechase. Miller finished in 6:41.82, more than 54 seconds ahead of the previous record, which Alana Chaplin set at 7:36.00 in 2018.
Miller also annihilated the field Saturday, as she opened up a 50-meter lead just two laps into the race while leading from start to finish. Miller finished more than 23 seconds ahead of the No. 2 finisher, Oregon's Kendall Martin in 7:05.07, and close to 32 seconds ahead of teammate
Phoebe Brown. Brown had a strong race herself, finishing in 7:13.75 to beat Chaplin's old record by more than 22 seconds and move her up to second all time in the 2k steeplechase.
Jordan MacIntosh threatened to set a third record for the Vikings Saturday. If he had been in a more competitive field, or the pace had been faster at the start, he might have done it. Instead, MacIntosh sat comfortably in third until the pace-setter stepped off with 500 meters to go and MacIntosh pushed into the lead at the bell. He quickly built a 10-meter lead with 300 meters to go, and by the time he crossed the line in 3:49.77, he was close to two seconds ahead of his nearest competitor.
MacIntosh's time gave him both the heat and overall win Saturday. It also moved him up to fifth all time in the event as only the second Viking since 2001 to run sub-3:50 in the men's 1,500 meters.
The Vikings will take next week off from competition before returning for the PacU Multi/Open and Stanford Invitational the following week.

PORTLAND, Ore. — It had been more than 10 months since
Dom Morganti ran in a Portland State singlet. After a standout first year with the Vikings, the grad transfer from Brown University was forced to sit out this year's cross country and indoor track & field seasons due to exhausting his eligibility. But that wait ended with a bang Saturday, as Morganti won the men's 5k at the L&C Spring Break Open in a new all-time top 10 mark.
Morganti finished in 14:28.32 – more than 45 seconds ahead of the No. 2 finisher – while setting a 10-second personal best and moving up to ninth on the career list at Portland State.
The triple crown of event win, personal best, and all-time top 10 mark for Morganti highlighted a busy day for the Vikings at Eldon Fix Track. Thirty different Vikings were in action Saturday, and that group contributed four more event wins in addition to Morganti's win in the 5k.
Three of the Vikings' event wins Saturday came from the throwing events, somewhat new territory for a Viking program that has focused on distance events since 2019.
Ahliah Nordstrom won the women's discus with a throw of 113-01 (34.46m), improving on her season-opening mark from two weeks ago by more than five feet.
Kennedy Freeman – one of six Portland State football players in action Saturday – swept the men's shot put and discus Saturday. He won the shot put with a mark of 41-09.75 (12.74m), while he doubled back and won the discus with a throw of 126-05 (38.54m).
The final event win came in the 4x400-meter relay in which the Vikings took the top two spots. The foursome of
Laura Beghin,
Sophie Jones,
Taylor Nichols and
Wendy Hare topped their Viking counterparts by close to six seconds with their finish in 4:12.32.
Outside of the event wins, several of the Vikings in action Saturday set personal bests.
On the track, that started with the men's 1,500 meters in which
Alex Solberg and
Jake Schulte both improved their previous bests. Solberg placed second overall in 3:55.48, more than 20 seconds faster than his prep personal best in the event.
Cam McChesney followed two spots back of Solberg in 3:56.86, less than three-tenths of a second off his personal best, which he set at the end of last season. Schulte, meanwhile, ran in another heat and finished in 4:07.66 to shave two seconds off a personal best he carried over from Saint Francis University.
McChesney came back later and set a personal best in the 800 meters, while leading a group of five Vikings in the event with his time of 1:59.67.
Pat Roos followed in 2:02.04, more than three seconds faster than his best 800-meter time during the 2023 indoor season.
Hare led the Viking women in the 800 meters with a time that put her just outside the all-time top 10 in the event. Hare finished in 2:13.80, less than a second behind the current No. 10 time, which Nyalual Beng set at 2:12.83 in 2016. Beng was also the last Viking to enter the top 10 in the women's outdoor 800 meters, so Hare could break that drought if she continues to lower her time later in the season.
Jones added another personal best in the women's 800 meters, as she shaved three-quarters of a second off her previous best with a finish in 2:23.03. Additionally, Nichols made her Viking debut in the 800 meters with a time of 2:25.44 Saturday.
Isa Swain led a group of four Vikings in the women's 1,500 meters in 4:52.97.
Peyten Woodruff followed in 4:53.07, close to 15 seconds faster than her prep best in the 1,600 meters.
Emma Owen finished just off her personal best in 4:59.12, while
Dyllan Newville shaved more than two seconds off her PR with a time of 5:16.81.
Abby Donde, finally, ran her first outdoor 5k as a Viking and placed fifth overall in 18:48.30.
