THE OPENING TIP
There is no time like the present for the Portland State Vikings to make their mark on the 2022-23 basketball season. After an arduous schedule over the first two months consisting of 12 of 16 games away from home, the Vikings will spend most of the next month competing in The Ship, also known as Viking Pavilion.

PSU (7-9, 1-2) will play six of the next eight games at home, beginning with two this week hosting Northern Arizona on Thursday and Northern Colorado on Saturday. Thursday's game will be the first at home in 26 days, and only the second in 40 days. Though they go on the road next week for two games, the Vikings will be right back home the following two weeks for four games at Viking Pavilion.

Portland State comes home off one of its best performances of the season, a 74-58 road win at Idaho. The Vikings shot .520 from the field and 9-14 from three-point range as they blew open the game in the second half. PSU trailed 30-27 at halftime, but went on a 47-28 binge in the second half. SR G Cameron Parker led the charge, scoring 16 of his game-high 18 points after intermission, adding six rebounds and three assists. JR G Jorell Saterfield and JR F Hunter Woods combined for 21 points on 8-10 field goals and 5-5 three-pointers.

The Vikings will rely heavily on those three veterans in the coming weeks as they are the top three scorers and rebounders on the team, combining for 40.2 points and 12.7 rebounds. They also have a combined 73 three-point field goals and shoot .829 at the free throw line. Parker leads the Big Sky in assists (5.4), Woods leads in steals (1.8) and Saterfield is second in three-point shooting (40 3-pt FG, .374).

That said, the Viking bench has played a big role this season as well, averaging 31.7 points to rank 13th in the nation, and shoots 49% as a group. PSU leads the Big Sky in scoring overall at 78.5 points per game.

PSU takes a 3-1 home record into this week's game. The Vikings lost their last home contest to a talented UC Santa Barbara team (12-2, 3-0 Big West) on Dec. 17, but had won eight straight at The Ship prior to that. Northern Arizona comes to Viking Pavilion with a 5-12 overall record, 1-3 in the Big Sky. Three of the Lumberjacks' last six games have gone to overtime, with their Big Sky win being a 75-74 decision over Montana. The 'Jacks are 1-8 on the road this season.

NAU guard Jalen Cone is the Big Sky's top three-point shooter (44 3-pt FG, .383) and ranks third in the league in scoring (17.4 ppg).

Saturday's opponent, Northern Colorado, is 5-11 overall, 0-4 in the Big Sky. Those numbers are a surprise as the Bears were the Big Sky runner-up last season, and picked to place second this season. They feature two of the top talents in the Big Sky in Dalton Knecht (19.1 ppg, 7.4 rpg) and Daylen Kountz (16.7 ppg, 3.3 apg, 1st team All-Big Sky last season).

Both games this week tip off at 7 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN+. Live statistics are available at www.ViksLive.com.

COMING UP
Portland State travels to Weber State and Idaho State next week. Following are home games against defending Big Sky Champion Montana State (Jan. 26), Montana (Jan. 28), Idaho (Feb. 2) and Eastern Washington (Feb. 4).

Feb. 17, 2022 at Viking Pavilion, PSU 68, NAU 67: The Lumberjacks took advantage of a size mismatch by swamping the Vikings on boards, 41-23. But NAU's Jalen Cone sparked a 14-4 rally by the 'Jacks, hitting back-to-back three-pointers, and adding a free throw on the second trey after drawing a foul. Lumberjack forward Nik Mains finally tied the game at 64 with his three-pointer at the 1:54 mark... Khalid Thomas made a basket in traffic with 1:02 left to make it 66-64, then Damion Squire made a pair of free throws with 10.2 seconds left. GRAND LARCENY
Remarkably, Portland State has led the Big Sky Conference in team steals per game for the past seven seasons. They lead once again with an 8.44 mark through 16 games. Thievery on the basketball court was also prevalent during the Barret Peery and Tyler Geving coaching eras. In addition, PSU has had two individual steals leaders with JR F Hunter Woods leading this year. A look:

Season, steals per game
2015-16: 8.5
2016-17: 9.9, individual: Calaen Robinson, 2.35
2017-18: 9.8
2018-19: 8.3
2019-20: 8.7, individual: Holland Woods, 2.06
2020-21: 8.2
2021-22: 9.3
2022-23: 8.5, individual: Hunter Woods, 1.81

1,000-700... THERE ARE ONLY TWO
SR G Cameron Parker passed 1,000 career points earlier this season then passed 700 career assists at Sacramento State on Dec. 31. Parker enters this week with 1,095 career points and 707 career assists in 123 career games. He is one of only two active players with 1,000 career points and 700 career assists. Jalen Pickett of Penn State has 1,839 points and reached 715 assists. He has also played in 123 career games entering this week... there are a handful of other active players at 1,000 career points and more than 600 assists, though none would reach 700 assists until at least late January based on current pace.

IT'S NOT WHO STARTS...
Portland State's bench has been very effective this season. Starters have logged 1,986 minutes and reserves have logged 1,214 minutes. Remarkably, in those minutes, the bench has kept a good scoring pace in relation to the starters, 748 to 508.
  • Bench players have logged 38% of the minutes and 41% of the points.
  • PSU ranks 13th in the nation in bench scoring at 31.7 points per game.
  • The bench has outscored the starters on three occasions.
  • Bench players (192-396, .485) have out-shot the starters (247-585, .422) from the field.

SHOOTING, SCORING... IT ALL MAKES SENSE
After 16 games this season...
  • The Vikings are 7-0 when they shoot a higher percentage than their opponents. They are 0-8 when they do not, 0-1 when shooting even.
