Vikings Hit the Road for Pair of Matches in Arizona

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State men's tennis team will head to Arizona this weekend for a pair of duals against Paradise Valley Community College and Northern Arizona. The Vikings will take on PVCC on Friday at 11 a.m. and Northern Arizona on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The Vikings enter the weekend at 3-11 overall, holding a 1-5 Big Sky record.

Competing with only five players last weekend, the Vikings fell 6-1 in back-to-back road matches to Idaho State and Weber State.

Both of Portland State's points over the weekend came in singles play. Nils Plutat secured the lone point for the Vikings against Idaho State last Friday, fighting his way to a 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 victory at No. 1 singles. On Saturday, Sam De Vries did the same against the Wildcats, securing the Viking's only point of the day with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 win at No. 4 singles.

De Vries now leads the Vikings with a 6-8 singles record during his freshman campaign. Plutat follows closely behind, entering the weekend with a 5-8 record.

PARADISE VALLEY (Friday, April 15, 11 a.m.)

Friday will be the Puma's eighth dual match of the season, as they enter the weekend with a 4-3 record. They earned their last win on March 24 with a sweep of Glendale Community College before falling to Mesa Community College in their most recent outing on April 6.

Friday will mark the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

NORTHERN ARIZONA (Saturday, April 16, 10 a.m.)

The 2021 Big Sky champion Lumberjacks have lived up to their name so far this season, holding a 16-8 overall record with a 4-2 mark in Big Sky action. Following three-straight losses, NAU got back on their feet last weekend with back-to-back 4-3 victories over Montana and Weber State.

The Vikings are 3-16 all-time against NAU. A season ago, NAU defeated the Vikings 4-0 in the first round of the Big Sky Championships in Phoenix.
