Vikings Set For Pair of Conference Duals at Home

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland State men's tennis team will return to the Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center this weekend to host Eastern Washington on Friday and Montana State on Saturday. Both matches are set to begin at 2 p.m.

The Vikings enter the weekend at 2-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play after dropping Big Sky matches to Montana (February 27) and Sacramento State (March 4).

Despite a 7-0 loss to UC Davis on Saturday, Sam De Vries and Nils Plutat put up a pair of three-set performances for the Vikings. Plutat battled Andrei Volgin at the top spot before eventually falling 6-3, 7-5, 10-8. De Vries did the same at No. 4 singles, winning his opening set 6-4 before being edged out by Ryan Morgan 6-4, 2-6, 10-8.

De Vries and Oliver Richards lead the Vikings in singles play with three wins apiece, while Plutat and Tommy Hsu have two wins each. This weekend, the Vikings hope to pick up their first Big Sky doubles win of the season.

EASTERN WASHINGTON

After being ranked last in the Big Sky Preseason Coaches Poll, the Eagles enter Friday's dual at 2-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play. They've dropped Big Sky duals to Montana State (7-0), Weber State (6-1), Idaho State (7-0), and Northern Arizona (7-0). EWU's last victory came against Whitman College, 7-0 on February 19.

Despite winning the last three matches, Portland State trails the all-time series 6-14. The Vikings topped the Eagles 5-2 on the road in 2021.

MONTANA STATE

The Bobcats are 11-4 overall and 1-0 in Big Sky action after being picked sixth in the Big Sky Preseason Coaches Poll. They've won three of their last four duals, their most recent win coming against Pacific (Calif.), 6-1. MSU hasn't played a Big Sky opponent since Jan. 23, when they defeated Eastern Washington 7-0. They'll take on the University of Portland in a non-conference dual before facing the Vikings on Saturday.

Despite PSU winning two of the last three duals, the Bobcats lead the all-time series 12-4. The Vikings earned a commanding 6-1 win over MSU in their previous meeting in 2021.
