PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland State men's tennis team will return to action this weekend after nearly a month since its season opener. The Vikings will dual George Fox at the Tualatin Hills Babette Horenstein Tennis Center on Friday before traveling to Seattle to face Washington on Saturday. Â
The 0-1 Vikings opened their season on Jan. 14 against Boise State before the next two matches were canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.
Despite playing shorthanded, Portland State gave the Broncos a run for their money in doubles action.
Tommy Hsu and
Sam De Vries earned their first win of the year at the No. 2 position (6-3) before the Broncos secured the point with a tight 7-5 win at No. 1.Â
De Vries and fellow freshmen
Oliver Fernandez highlighted the Vikings in singles play, each pushing their Bronco opponents to a third set before ultimately falling short.Â
Portland State will head into Friday's dual with a full roster that includes a new but familiar face. This past week, senior
Otto Holtari re-joined the team after opting out of the 2021 season. Holtari began his career with the Vikings in 2017 and has played three seasons with PSU. The Espoo, Finland native is the all-time leader in win percentage at No. 5 singles (.529) and is tied for second all-time in wins at No. 6 singles (9).
GEORGE FOX
Following a 12-5 finish in 2021, the Bruins will open their 2022 campaign against Portland State on Friday. A match between the two teams was scheduled last season but was canceled due to inclement weather. The Vikings hold a perfect 5-0 record against GFU, their most recent win occurring on the road in 2020 (5-2).
WASHINGTON
The Vikings will face a talented Washington team in Seattle on Saturday. The Huskies currently sit 7-0 and have completed four sweeps. They lead the all-time series 3-0 and have yet to allow the Vikings to score a point. Portland State fell in their last meeting in Seattle last March, 7-0. Â
