Vikings Claim Ten Wins at Gonzaga Invitational

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland State's men's tennis team combined for seven singles wins and three doubles victories at the Gonzaga Invitational in Spokane over the weekend. 

The Vikings played a total of 17 matches, going 10-7 against opponents from Washington, Gonzaga, Montana, Eastern Washington and Idaho. The Vikings posted a 5-0 record against the defending Big Sky Champion Vandals. 

Simon Kuszynski and Andrin Zuellig both advanced to the quarterfinals in the white singles bracket, defeating a pair of Big Sky foes along the way. Kuszynski earned a 6-7 (3), 7-6 (7), 6-1 win over Idaho's Alex Asenov before falling to Gonzaga's Pablo Gomez Galvan 6-3, 6-4. Zuellig defeated Idaho's Vivek Ramesh 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 before dropping his quarterfinal match to Montana's George Russell (6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-4). 

After losing their first matches of the weekend, Gregory Gruenig and Andrea Brignacca rebounded in their respective consolation brackets. Gruenig topped a trio of Big Sky opponents on his way to a white consolation championship. Following wins over Montana's Fernando Perez (6-3, 3-6, 10-8), and Eastern Washington's Tyler Dalos (7-5, 7-5), Gruenig defeated Idaho's Adam Taylor 6-3, 7-5 to claim the consolation title. Brignacca advanced to the blue consolation final with wins over UM's Mortiz Stoeger (6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 10-5) and EWU's Erik Sarlvik (6-4, 6-2). 

Brignacca and Jan Semerak made a run in the blue doubles bracket, emerging as runner-up in the eight-team field. The duo defeated Montana's Tom Bittner and Mortiz Stoeger 8-5, before earning a spot in the championship match with an 8-6 victory over Taiyo Kurata and Francisco Gay 8-6. They fell to Gonzaga's Sasha Trukulja and Leon Roider 8-5 in the final round. Kuszynski and Gruenig paired up in the white doubles flight, advancing to the quarterfinals with an 8-3 win over Vandal opponents Vivek Ramesh and Adam Taylor. They later fell to Montana's Fernandez Perez and Guillermo Martin 8-6. 

Portland State will close out its fall season this weekend at the Duck Invitational in Eugene (Nov. 11-13).
