Vikings Close Out Big Sky Schedule With Weekend Series Against Sacramento State

PORTLAND – The Portland State women's soccer team will host Sacramento State on Friday and Sunday in its final Big Sky series of the season.

The Vikings will open the weekend against the Hornets on Friday (1:00 p.m) before hosting a rematch on Sunday (11:30 a.m.). Viking Head Coach Katie Burton and her squad will honor seven athletes on Sunday as part of their 2020-21 senior class. Both games will be played at Hillsboro Stadium and will be broadcasted live on Pluto TV. 

PSU will allow a maximum of 250 fans for each match. Fans are asked to observe social distancing, wear masks and must sign in in the event of contact tracing.

LAST TIME OUT 

In its last time out, PSU dropped a pair of matches to the University of Montana (6-0 BSC) on March 26th and 28th. Before getting a break in action this past weekend, the Vikings held their own against the Big Sky's top team, falling 2-1 after a late goal. The Vikings dropped their second match to the Grizzlies 3-0 as they moved to 0-6-0 on the season.  

VIKING SCORERS

Sienna Higinbotham struck first for the Vikings' in the second period of the season opener against Eastern Washington. 

Freshman Ani Jensen from Salt Lake City, Utah cashed her first collegiate shot for a goal in the second period of game two against EWU. 

Off an assist from Jensen, Viking junior defender Paige Donathan netted the first goal of her collegiate career in the 28th minute of game one against Montana.

HERNANDEZ IN GOAL

Sophomore Enya Hernandez has spent all 540 minutes in goal for the Vikings this season. Hernandez's 37 saves ranks fourth in the conference while she holds the third spot in saves per game, averaging 6.17. 

KEY STATISTICS

  • The Vikings average 6.3 shots per game, recording 20 shots on goal in 38 attempts for a shot on goal percentage of .526
  • Higinbotham (6) and Sofi Papastamos (5) lead the Vikings in shot attempts 
  • Aside from Higinbotham and Papastamos, 13 other Vikings have recorded shot attempts 
  • Sophomore forward Chloe Huling was the lone Viking to notch a multi-shot match against Montana as she recorded two shots (one on goal) in the first contest
  • The Vikings have seen just five corner kick opportunities through six matches, three of those coming against the Vandals
  • Senior defender Tasi Poore has clocked 473 minutes this season while Liz Hansen follows closely behind spending 458 minutes on the field so far this season

SENIOR SEND OFF

Portland State will graduate seven letter winners following the conclusion of the season. All seven athletes will be honored on Sunday in their final game at Hillsboro Stadium.

Kasey Isobe (RS Senior) - Despite missing her 2019 campaign due to injury, this season marks Isobe's fifth with the Vikings after arriving in Portland in 2016. The Hawaii native has made 37 starts in her career while netting four goals and adding three assists. Isobe tied the program record for most points in a match (8) against Chicago State in 2017 and is one of just ten players in program history to record a hat trick. 

Emilee Greve (Senior) – Greve came to Portland State after spending two seasons at Peninsula College. As a junior in 2019, the Auburn, Wash. native appeared in 17 matches while clocking 426 minutes of action for the Vikings. So far this season, Greve has appeared in all six games, seeing two starts while recording three shots. 

Molly Joyce (Senior) – Joyce transferred to Portland State prior to the 2017 season. The Brookings, Ore. native has appeared in 29 matches, recording one assist and one goal. Joyce has tallied 13 shots and put four shots on goal in her career with the Vikings. 

Van Winstone (Senior) – Winston joined PSU prior to the 2019 season after spending her first two seasons at Fairmont State and Louisiana Tech. The England native has been a crucial member of the back line in her two years with the Vikings, appearing in 20 matches while making ten starts. 

Paige Donathan (Junior) – Donathan joined the Vikings as a freshman in 2017 and has since appeared in 39 matches, starting in 18. The Glendale, Ariz. native has notched 11 shots in her career and earlier this season scored her first career goal at Montana on March 26. 

Tasi Poore (Senior) – This season marks Poore's fourth with Portland State. The senior defender has started in 39 of the last 40 matches for the Vikings. Poore recorded her first collegiate assist in 2017 and scored her first collegiate goal against Idaho State in 2018. The Beaverton, Ore. native has seen 473 minutes of action so far this year.  

Teá Poore (Senior) - Teá came to Portland State as a freshman in 2017. While starting in 34 matches, the senior midfielder has tallied three assists in her career to go along with one goal. The Beaverton, Ore. native earned Big Sky Honorable Mention honors following her junior season in 2019. Poore has clocked 239 minutes of action through six games for the Vikings this season. 


SACRAMENTO STATE HORNETS

Coming off a pair of losses to Montana, the Hornets will enter Friday in search of their first conference win of the season (1-4-4 overall, 0-4-2 BSC) Sacramento State has scored just five goals through 9 matches while allowing 11. In his 14th season at the helm, the Hornets are led by Head Coach Randy Dedini. Dedini and his squad entered their 2020 spring campaign after being tabbed a fourth-place finish in the Big Sky. 

SERIES HISTORY 

The Vikings trail 13-10-3 in the all-time series against the Hornets. Sacramento State earned a 2-1 victory in 2019 which marks the last meeting between the two teams. A former player and coach at Sacramento State, Coach Burton will look to build on a 2-1 record against her alma mater.
