Vikings Roll To 6-1 Win As Edwards Ties Singles Record

Box Score Portland, OR – Portland State started strong then hung on as it defeated Seattle, 6-1, in men's tennis on Friday. The Vikings had a convincing winning score, but also a handful of closely contested matches requiring them to win three of four tiebreakers.
 
The Vikings improved their record to 6-5 with the win, including 5-0 at their home venue of THPRD's Babette Horenstein Tennis Center.
 
Portland State took the doubles point with three wins. Nikola Dimitrijevic and Bryan Husin teamed for a quick 6-1 victory at number-three doubles. Tommy Hsu and Sam Roberts came in close behind with a 6-1 win at number-two. Matteo Fortini and Tommy Edwards had a tougher battle at number-one. Up early 3-1, they fell behind 6-5 late in the match. But they tied it at six, then won a 7-4 tiebreaker getting them a 7-6 advantage and clean sweep for the Vikings.
 
In singles, PSU came away with five of six matches. Edwards took a three-set win, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, over Seattle's Lucas Cerbelli. The victory marked a milestone for Edwards, a senior, as he tied Nathan Boniel for Portland State's all-time record for wins in singles with 45. Edwards will have a chance to break the record on Sunday against Montana.
 
Fortini, the reigning Big Sky Conference Player of the Week, won a two-set match, but needed a tie-breaker in the second set for victory, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), over Eli Ogilvy.
 
Tommy Hsu picked up the first singles victory of the day with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win at number-four over Emilio Monroy.
 
At number-three singles, Dimitrijevic had the most hotly-contested match of the day. He eventually succumbed to Julian Worn, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
 
The Vikings closed out the match with a win at number five from Nils Plutat, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) over Seattle's Mats Krause, and a win at number six from Sam Roberts over Lars Schmassmann, 6-1, 6-4.
 
Seattle University dropped to 2-8 on the season with the loss.

  • Tommy Edwards improved to 7-4 on the season in singles. Sam Roberts is now 5-2 in singles.
  • Edwards and Fortini's doubles record improves to 7-3.
  • PSU leads the all-time series with Seattle, 8-4.
