Box Score PORTLAND- The Portland State men's tennis team fell to crosstown opponent University of Portland 5-2 on Friday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
 
The loss puts the Vikings at 0-1 to begin the season while UP picks up its first win of the year for a 1-0 mark.
 
Portland State used a pair of singles wins to post two points in the loss, good enough for a program series best against the Pilots.
 
"It was a good first showing from our guys who haven't had a dual match since last March," head coach Vetu Mam said. "We went out there with great energy from start to finish and it's just gonna get better with each match."

Tommy Edwards and partner Matteo Fortini recorded the only doubles win for PSU, defeating Eleftherios Neos and Issa Yoshida 6-3. Nils Plutat and Tommy Hsu at No. 2 doubles and Nikola Dimitrijevic and Bryan Husin at the No. 3 spot both fell by scores of 6-3.  
 
Earning singles victories for the Vikings were Dimitrijevic at No.3 (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) and Edwards at No. 2 (6-4, 6-3).
 
Fortini put up a fight at the No. 1 spot but suffered his first loss of the season 6-4, 6-3 to Portland's top man.
 
The Vikings were unable to capitalize on the early victories as they fell in three consecutive matches at the bottom half of the lineup.
 
Clinching the win for UP was a victory at No. 5 singles that saw Nikolas Tyedt defeat PSU's Plutat to lock in the fourth point.
 
At No. 6 singles, Leo Hibi and Tommy Hsu concluded the scoring with Hibi earning the final victory of the day for the Pilots 6-4, 6-4.
 
PSU will continue its opening weekend with a doubleheader against the University of Oregon on Saturday (10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.)
