Vikings Continue Non-Conference Slate with Dual Against George Fox

PORTLAND – The Portland State men's tennis team will make a short trip for its dual this weekend as the Vikings take on George Fox on Friday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m.
 
The Vikings (0-3) are coming off a 5-2 loss to Santa Clara, picking up wins in the top doubles spot as well as the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in singles.
 
RECAP:
The Vikings made a strong showing throughout the dual, starting off with a win in the top doubles spot as Tommy Edwards and Sam Roberts defeated Santa Clara's 52nd-ranked duo 6-4. The Broncos wrapped up the other two matches to win the doubles point.
 
In singles, Edwards followed up his doubles performance with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 while Matteo Fortini battled against Santa Clara's top player, jumping ahead to a 6-4 win in the opening set before holding on to win the second 7-5.
 
Nikola Dimitrijevic dropped a heartbreaker in his singles match, playing nearly two and a half hours before falling 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3.

Dimitrijevic and Edwards lead the Vikings with three wins each in singles play while Ryan Nakajima leads in doubles victories with five. Four other Vikings have tallied two wins of the seasons.
 
BIG SKY WEEKLY HONORS:
After picking up his two wins over Santa Clara, Edwards was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
 
RECORD WATCH:
Entering his senior year, Edwards has already accumulated several records including most doubles wins at No. 1 and most singles win at No. 2, but he is quickly approaching some other career milestones. With 37 career doubles victories, Edwards is only two shy of tying the all-time record while in singles, he is seven match wins shy of tying the record for Big Sky wins, and 10 wins away from the all-time singles win record.
 
SCOUTING GEORGE FOX:
George Fox begins its spring season on Friday, playing the first dual of the season against the Vikings. The Bruins finished 12-8 overall last season while going 7-1 in the Northwest Conference. Will Leach returns as the win leader for George Fox, tallying a 13-3 singles record in the 2018-19 season while adding 12 wins in doubles.
 
ALL-TIME RECORD VS. GEORGE FOX:
Since the first meeting back in 2001, the Vikings are a perfect 4-0 against George Fox, most recently winning 6-1 last season. Portland State won its first two meetings 7-0 while winning the last two 6-1.
 
QUICK HITS:
-The Vikings dropped to 0-3 overall after a close match with Santa Clara last week.
-Edwards was named the Big Sky Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the first time after tallying two wins.
-Edwards and Dimitrijevic lead the Vikings in singles wins with three each while Nakajima holds five doubles victories.
-Portland State has never lost to George Fox, holding a perfect 4-0 record in duals.
-At the Pacific Northwest Invitational, Edwards and Nakajima won the doubles bracket, defeating a George Fox duo in the final round. Both players also picked up singles victories over a Bruin.
 
SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:
Sept. 13 – Tommy Edwards and Ryan Nakajima won the doubles "A" bracket at the Pacific Northwest Invitational.
