THE OPENING TIP
Portland State comes off an excellent week of play with two wins, but has a lot more to get done before the Big Sky Conference Tournament.
    Â
The Vikings beat Northern Arizona (103-94) and Southern Utah (78-69) last week to improve its record to 11-14 overall, 6-8 in the Big Sky. That moved them up to seventh place in the league standings.
    Â
This week, Portland State is home for two more games, hosting Idaho State (9-15, 5-10) and Sacramento State (11-12, 5-9), at the Viking Pavilion. PSU needs to continue to win if it wants to continue to climb in the standings and get to at least fifth place and a first-round bye in the Big Sky Tournament.
    Â
The schedule is favorable as four of the final six games are at home for the Vikings. They have won four straight in Viking Pavilion, and are 8-4 at home overall this season. This week, they must avenge a pair of road losses at ISU (69-67 on Feb. 2) and SAC (78-67 on Feb. 11).
    Â
The standings between fifth and 10th place remain extremely close (see below). PSU is currently a game-and-a-half behind fifth-place Eastern Washington (7-6) as the Eagles go into a Monday night home game against Idaho (1-12).
    Â
Idaho State comes to the Viking Pavilion losers of three straight games. The Bengals are 5-9 on the road this season, 3-5 in Big Sky road games. However, they do have an earlier win over the Vikings. ISU features a strong three-point shooting team as it ranks second in the league in three-point field goals made per game (9.4) and three-point percentage (.370).
    Â
Portland State appears revitalized by its return home. The Vikings had played the fewest home games of any Big Sky team entering last week and, along with Montana, have still played the fewest entering this week (6).
    Â
The Vikings shot 66-121 (.545) from the field in last week's two wins, averaging 90.5 points. Those kind of numbers can win almost any night. SO G
Holland Woods averaged 23.0 points, 9.0 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals in the two games. JR G
Michael Nuga (17.0 ppg, 2.0 apg) and JR C
Sal Nuhu (14.5 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 4.0 bpg) also had big weekends. The Vikings got back to improved defensive pressure and ball-handling, forcing 15.5 turnovers in the two games and committing only 11.0 (+4.5 per game).
    Â
Thursday night's game against Idaho State tips off at 7:05 p.m. It will be live streamed on Pluto TV Channel 232, pluto.tv and WatchBigSky.com. Matt Richert will have the play-by-play call. Live stats are available at www.ViksLive.com.

The game was tied 62-62 with four minutes to play, but the Vikings came up empty on four of their next five possessions, allowing ISU to go up 69-64. PSU still had a chance, but
Deante Strickland missed a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer. Gary Chivichyan scored 16 points to lead Idaho State.
Holland Woods and

Peery was also a graduate assistant for Evans in 1995-96, and played for Evans from 1993-95. Peery has won two of the first three meetings against his mentor.

However, the Vikings also used the Rose Garden (now Moda Center) and Memorial Coliseum occasionally over the years. In 2017-18, PSU used Lewis & Clark College's Pamplin Sports Center as a home court while the Viking Pavilion was being completed. Here is the breakdown:
 - Viking Pavilion - 12 games, 8-4
