THE OPENING TIP
After an eight-day, four-game odyssey, the Portland State Vikings are happy to be home.
A road trip that included opponents from four different conferences came out reasonably well with a 2-2 record. The Vikings are now 3-5 on the season and look forward to a little rest, and in some cases, recuperation.
Portland State is off until a Friday night matchup against CSUN of the Big West Conference. Then, they are off again until a Dec. 12 home game against Portland Bible. The final non-conference trip of the season is Dec. 17-19 at Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount. So, the Vikings will be home for two solid weeks with just two games during that stretch.
It will be an important learning time for the team in practice after a busy November filled with games. It will also be an opportunity to get healthy. The Vikings have missed the presence of SR C
Sal Nuhu in the middle. He went out with an ankle injury in the first half against the University of Portland all the way back on Nov. 20. Since then, Nuhu has missed four games and the Vikings have played considerably smaller. Also missing time has been SR F
Alonzo Walker, PSU's third-leading scorer and second-leading rebounder. He was out against UC Santa Barbara and was unable to go after halftime at Oregon State due to a heel injury, making Portland State smaller still. Head Coach
Barret Peery can only hope those two are ready for the Matadors later this week.
In the meantime, the Vikings have gotten excellent play from their starting backcourt of JR G
Holland Woods and SR G
Matt Hauser. Woods is averaging a Big Sky-leading 19.5 points per game, as well as 4.8 assists and 2.0 steals. Hauser has averaged 16.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and made a team-leading 19 three-pointers.
And while the Vikings have been short-handed and undersized in recent games, it hasn't impacted their battle and tenacity on the court. PSU took a talented Oregon State team to the final minute in Corvallis on Sunday afternoon before losing, 81-75. Although their numbers were not dramatic, key contributions off the bench kept the Vikings in it. SR F
Markus Golder (10 pts, 5 reb), SR G
Lamar Hamrick (4 pts, 4 reb, 3 ast) and SO G
Ian Burke (6 pts, 2 reb, 2 st) all were part of the Viking rally down the stretch. In fact, Burke (+10), Golder (+9) and Hamrick (+8) all had the best plus/minus marks of any player on both teams with the exception of OSU's Zach Reichle (+11).
The depth of the Viking bench is beginning to show and that may be key again this Friday when the Vikings host the Matadors. PSU is 1-1 at home this season, having seen its nine-game Viking Pavilion win streak go down against Portland. PSU is 13-5 all-time at Viking Pavilion, 54-11 in all non-conference home games over the past 13 seasons.
The Vikings will try to get a new streak started against a CSUN team it has not faced in four years. The Matadors are the third Big West opponent of the season for the Vikings.
CSUN comes in at just 1-7 on the season. However, the Matadors got a big 73-72 win over Fresno State in their last outing. CSUN is 0-5 on the road this season.
The Vikings and Matadors have one common opponent. Oregon State beat CSUN in the season opener, 87-67, in Corvallis.
CSUN plays at the University of Portland on Wednesday, prior to playing the Vikings.
This Friday's game is part of a doubleheader with the Portland State women. The Viking women host Grand Canyon in a 5 p.m. game at Viking Pavilion. The Vikings and the Matadors square off at 7:35 p.m. Both games will be live streamed on Pluto TV Channel 532, www.pluto.tv and www.WatchBigSky.com. Live stats are available at www.ViksLive.com.
COMING UP
The Vikings' next game is Dec. 12 against Portland Bible at home. PSU wraps up non-conference play on Dec. 17 at Pepperdine and Dec. 19 at Loyola Marymount.
GAME NOTES: PORTLAND STATE vs. CSUN
• ALL-TIME SERIES: CSUN leads the all-time series with the Vikings 10-5. The Matadors and Vikings were once Big Sky Conference opponents (1996-2001) before CSUN left for the Big West. The Matadors held a 7-3 edge in those games... PSU is 3-4 all-time at home against CSUN... the most recent meeting was a 77-71 Matador win over the Vikings on Dec. 17, 2015 in the old Stott Center gym.
• PORTLAND STATE vs. THE BIG WEST: Portland State is 28-38 all-time against current members of the Big West Conference, including 0-2 this season. The Vikings lost at Hawai'i, 83-75, on Nov. 15 and at UC Santa Barbara, 81-70, on Nov. 27... Coach
Barret Peery is 2-3 against Big West schools in his PSU career.
• COACHES: Vikings Coach
Barret Peery (Southern Utah, 1996) is in his third season on the Park Blocks and has a 39-35 career record. Peery has never faced CSUN... Peery's only other head coaching experience is at the junior college level where he was 178-30 in six seasons (2005-08, College of Southern Idaho; 2011-14, Indian Hills (IA) CC)... the Matadors are coached by Mark Gottfried (Montana, 2005) in his second season. He is 14-28 at CSUN. In 22 seasons of collegiate coaching Gottfried is 416-268 overall. He has coached at Murray State, Alabama and North Carolina State... Gottfried has never faced Portland State.
CSUN MATADORS
• CSUN, a member of the Big West Conference, is located in Northridge, CA.
• The Matadors were 13-21 last season, 7-9 and tied for sixth in the Big West Conference. Four starters and 10 letterwinners return from that team.
• CSUN has begun the season just 1-7, but won their most recent game over Fresno State. The Matadors average 70.5 points per game, but are allowing 88.1. They have allowed opponents to shoot .501 from the field and .410 from three-point range. CSUN has also been out-rebounded by 7.3 per game.
• Though only 5-8, junior guard Terrell Gomez has played big, averaging 22.1 points per game. He has made 30-73 three-pointers (.411) on the season.
• Sophomore guard Darius Brown II averages 10.3 points and 5.6 assists per game.
SUSTAINABLE AND RECYCLABLE VIKING QUICK NOTES
WINNING LINES
• Portland State is 3-5 on the season, 1-1 at home, 1-4 on the road and 1-0 in neutral site games.
• The Vikings' nine-game home winning streak came to an end in the loss to Portland.
• In 2018-19, PSU was 16-16, 12-4 at home, 3-10 on the road, 1-2 at neutral sites... PSU's 11-9 conference record was its best since going 11-9 in 2013-14. The Vikings were 8-2 at home, 3-7 on the road... PSU was 1-1 in overtime.
Home Court(s)
• Portland State opened the Viking Pavilion at the Peter W. Stott Center in 2018-19. The Stoller Family Court is PSU's fifth (and hopefully final) home court since joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996-97. Previously, the main home court was the old Peter W. Stott Center. However, the Vikings also used the Rose Garden (now Moda Center) and Memorial Coliseum occasionally over the years. In 2017-18, PSU used Lewis & Clark College's Pamplin Sports Center as a home court while the Viking Pavilion was being completed. Here is the breakdown:
- Viking Pavilion - 18 games, 13-5
- Peter W. Stott Center - 233 games, 168-65
- Rose Garden (Moda Center) - 28 games, 19-9
- Memorial Coliseum - 19 games, 13-6
- Lewis and Clark - 12 games, 7-5
- 24th season - 310 games, 220-90 at home overall
• Portland State has lost only 11 non-conference home games in the last 13 seasons (54-11). PSU is 28-11 against Division I schools, and 26-0 against lower division schools over that span.
WHO IS HOT
• PSU has 78 steals, opponents just 34. The Vikings lead the Big Sky in steals (9.8).
• Portland State leads the Big Sky in offensive rebounding (16.0) and turnover margin (+4.6).
• The Vikings had shot 45-53 at the line in the last three games (.849).
• JR G
Holland Woods had his best field goal shooting game of the season (8-13 FG, 3-5 3-pt) in a 22-point effort at UC Santa Barbara. He followed that with 23 points (7-16 FG, 1-4 3-pt, 8-9 FT) at Oregon State... Woods is averaging 21.0 points and 5.2 assists over the last five games while shooting .500 from the field, .400 from three-point range and .893 at the line.
• SR F
Rashaad Goolsby has averaged 9.5 rebounds in the last four games, also his first four career starts.
• SR F
Markus Golder averaged 9.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in 19.5 minutes per game off the bench on the four-game road trip.
WHO IS NOT
• SR C
Sal Nuhu has missed four games with an ankle sprain.
• SR F
Alonzo Walker missed the game at UC Santa Barbara and the second half at Oregon State with a heel injury.
• Portland State (.423/.301) has been out-shot by opponents (.488/.373) from the field this season.
• The Vikings are last in scoring defense in the Big Sky Conference (78.9).
PEERY PRESSURE AND PACE
Portland State continues to turn up the pressure in the third season of the
Barret Peery Era. The Vikings maintain relentless full-court pressure and crash the offensive glass with abandon.
• Through eight games, PSU has 38 more offensive rebounds than their opponents (4.8 more per game) and have forced 37 more turnovers than they have committed (4.6 per game). The 75 extra possessions amounts to more than nine per game.
• So far this season, PSU has an edge over opponents in points off turnovers (148-115) and second chance points (120-99).
• In 2017-18, the Vikings offensive rebound and turnover margin totals amounted to 9.7 more possessions per game than opponents.
• In 2018-19, the Vikings offensive rebound and turnover margin totals amounted to 7.4 more possessions per game than opponents.
SOMETHING LOOKS FAMILIAR HERE
Portland State has lost five games through the first month of the season. The scores have looked strangely similar. What to make of it? Hard to say... except that even in losses, the Vikings have been very competitive. The scores: 85-74, 83-75, 82-75, 81-70, 81-76.
BOO BOO ON THE VERGE
Portland State point guard Holland "Boo Boo" Woods is on the verge of becoming the number one helper in Viking basketball history. Woods has 394 career assists in 73 games (5.4 pg). That total has him ranked second all-time at PSU. Woods, a junior, is only 27 assists away from the record held by Terry Adolph in 1976-78. Adolph was a prolific assist man in his two-season career at PSU, no doubt benefiting from having the second all-time leading scorer in NCAA history playing alongside him in Freeman Williams. Adolph averaged 7.8 assists per game in each of his two seasons, totaling 421 in 54 games. Behind Adolph is teammate Chucky Smith (1974-78, 392 assists) and "modern-era" star Derek Nesland (1996-2000, 371 assists).
As for Woods, at his current pace he would break the Portland State assist mark some time in late December of this season.
Woods is also on pace to reach 1,000 career points and it could come as early as this Friday. He would be the 19th Viking in history to reach that milestone (currently 978).
And finally, Woods now has 115 career steals, ranking fourth all-time at PSU. The school record is 128 by Calaen Robinson (2015-17). Woods would be on pace to set that record later this season.

HAUSER FILLING A VOID
SR G
Matt Hauser is a graduate transfer from Santa Clara where he made 113 three-pointers in three seasons. The hope for Hauser is that he will provide that kind of production for a Viking team that was sub-par from outside last season. So far, so good.
• Hauser is averaging 16.1 points while shooting .424 from the field, .328 from three-point range and .769 at the free throw line. He has a team-high 19 three-point field goals.
• Has led the team in scoring three times this season and has two 20+ point games.

TALKING THE WALKER
The Vikings' other graduate transfer newcomer, SR F

• Walker has led the team in rebounding twice.
• Posted 13 points with nine rebounds and two blocked shots in the win at San Jose State.
• Scored 13 points with eight rebounds and two steals against Portland.
GOOD STARTS FOR GOOLSBY
SR F
Rashaad Goolsby does not normally start, but has the last four games as the Vikings have dealt with injuries. And Goolsby has certainly produced, averaging 8.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.8 steals, making 12-14 free throws (.867).
• For the season, he is averaging 7.8 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.3 steals in 28.4 minutes per game. Last season, he averaged 4.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 0.7 steals in 18.3 minutes per game.
• Has led the team in rebounding six times this season.

• Made a career-high five steals against Portland.
• Goolsby grabbed 10 rebounds in the win over Puget Sound.
SEASON HIGHLIGHT REEL
• Nov. 5: PSU 94, Puget Sound 69: Five Vikings scored in double figures, led by 13 points from SR G
Matt Hauser. SR C
Sal Nuhu tied his career high with five blocked shots, and SR F
Rashaad Goolsby set a new career high with 10 rebounds. PSU made 18 steals, forcing UPS into 31 turnovers in the game.
• Nov. 9: Indiana 85, PSU 74: The much bigger Hoosiers out-rebounded the Vikings, 41-24, in the contest while shooting over 50% from the field. JR G
Holland Woods had 27 points for the Vikings and back-court mate SR G
Matt Hauser added 21. The Vikings shot just .412 from the field.
• Nov. 15: Hawai'i 83, PSU 75: It was a single-digit game the entire way, but the Rainbow Warriors maintained the lead for most of it. In an otherwise even contest, Hawai'i just shot the ball better, hitting .508 from the field compared to .391 for the Vikings. SR G
Matt Hauser led PSU with 18 points and seven rebounds.
• Nov. 20: Portland 82, PSU 75: The Vikings led the entire first half, but Portland grabbed the lead early in the second half and had it most of the rest of the way. A late 14-3 run by the Pilots was the difference. UP shot .528 from the field to only .409 for the Vikings. JR G
Holland Woods had his second 20-point game of the season with 22 points, five assists and four rebounds.
• Nov. 23: PSU 91, San Jose State 76: Portland State never trailed in the game, led by 10 at halftime and as many as 24 in the second half on the way to the first road victory of the season. SR G

Matt Hauser added 19 points and five steals. The Vikings made a season-best 18-19 at the line (.947).
• Nov. 27: UC Santa Barbara 81, PSU 70: The Gauchos led the entire way, but the Vikings had the game within five on two occasions inside the final four minutes. UCSB shot .525 from the field to only .419 for the Vikings. PSU was without starting big men SR C
Sal Nuhu and SR F
Alonzo Walker. JR G
Holland Woods scored 22 points (8-13 FG, 3-5 3-pt, 3-4 FT) with five assists to lead the Vikings. SR F
Rashaad Goolsby had his third straight 10+ rebound game.
• Dec. 1: Oregon State 81, PSU 76: Despite being short-handed (and short), the Vikings took Oregon State to the final minute before losing their second game in a row. The Beavers shot .556 from the field, but PSU out-rebounded the bigger Beavers, 39-32, to stay close on a 19-7 second-chance-point advantage. JR G
Holland Woods led the way with 23 points and seven rebounds.
