THE OPENING TIP
Knowing that "if you haven't got your health, you haven't got anything," the Portland State Vikings have battled to keep things together early in the 2019-20 non-conference season.
    Â
First, the Vikings lost JR G
Kimani Binder to an achilles injury during preseason practice. SR G
Lamar Hamrick missed the first few games with a wrist injury. Lately, starting SR C
Sal Nuhu has missed three games with an ankle sprain, and then starting SR F
Alonzo Walker was unable to go on Wednesday with a heel injury.
    Â
So, with a 3-4 record heading into a Sunday contest at Oregon State, perhaps the Vikings have done fairly well for themselves. In the past week they won a road game at San Jose State, then a neutral site game over defending SWAC Champion Grambling State, before losing 81-70 at UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday night.
    Â
The Vikings were playing undermanned and undersized at UCSB without Nuhu and Walker, but managed to stay in the game late. Strong play from the PSU backcourt of
Holland Woods and
Matt Hauser has buoyed the Vikings through challenging times.
    Â
Woods, the Vikings' junior point guard, comes off a 22-point, five-assist game at UCSB. He leads the Vikings this season with a Big Sky-best 19.0 points per game and 5.4 assists. Hauser, a graduate transfer, comes in at 16.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Senior forward
Rashaad Goolsby has played well in the absence of Nuhu, grabbing 31 rebounds in the last three games and 7.7 per game this season.
    Â
Oregon State poses one of the most challenging matchups of the non-conference schedule for PSU. The Beavers are 6-1, including 4-0 at home, and have been convincing in their play, outscoring opponents by more than 15 per game. Just who will be available to go for Portland State at OSU is yet to be determined, but either way it will be a major test for the Vikings.
    Â
Portland State will also be going up against history as the Viking program has never beaten Oregon State (0-13). The most recent meeting was a 79-74 Beavers win on Dec. 12, 2012 in PSU's old Stott Center arena. Since the Viking program was reinstated in 1996-97 and joined the Big Sky Conference, OSU holds a 6-0 edge in the series, with four wins coming at Gill Coliseum. Four of those games have been decided by five points or less.
    Â
Sunday's game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network at 3 p.m. Live stats are available at www.ViksLive.com.
Â
COMING UP
Portland State returns home after a 16-day absence to play CSUN of the Big West Conference on Dec. 6. Tip-off is 7:35 p.m. at Viking Pavilion, following the PSU women's game with Grand Canyon. The Vikings' next home game is Dec. 12 against Portland Bible.
Â

• COMMON OPPONENTS: Portland State and Oregon State have played San Jose State, Grambling State and UC Santa Barbara as part of the Las Vegas Holiday Classic... OSU is 3-0 against those opponents, beating Grambling State and UC Santa Barbara in Corvallis, and San Jose State in Las Vegas... the Vikings are 2-1 against those opponents, winning at San Jose State and beating Grambling State in Santa Barbara. Peery has a 106-81 win at Cal and two losses to Oregon over the past two seasons, 95-84 and 84-57, ... PSU has wins over Oregon (2), Arizona State (2), USC (1), Stanford (1) and Cal (1) in its history - all coming during PSU's Big Sky Conference era.

Tinkle has an 81-84 record at Oregon State and is 239-175 in 14 seasons as a collegiate coach... Â

Â
BOO BOO ON THE VERGE
Portland State point guard Holland "Boo Boo" Woods is on the verge of becoming the number one helper in Viking basketball history. Woods has 394 career assists in 72 games (5.5 pg). That total has him ranked second all-time at PSU. Woods, a junior, is only 27 assists away from the record held by Terry Adolph in 1976-78. Adolph was a prolific assist man in his two-season career at PSU, no doubt benefiting from having the second all-time leading scorer in NCAA history playing alongside him in Freeman Williams. Adolph averaged 7.8 assists per game in each of his two seasons, totaling 421 in 54 games. Behind Adolph is teammate Chucky Smith (1974-78, 392 assists) and "modern-era" star Derek Nesland (1996-2000, 371 assists).
    Â
As for Woods, at his current pace he would break the Portland State assist mark some time in late December of this season.
    Â
Woods is also on pace to reach 1,000 career points in December. He would be the 19th Viking in history to reach that milestone (currently 955).
    Â
And finally, Woods now has 114 career steals, ranking fifth all-time at PSU. The school record is 128 by Calaen Robinson (2015-17). Woods would be on pace to set that record later this season.

HAUSER FILLING A VOID
SR G

• He averaged 8.4 points and 2.4 assists in his 85-game career at Santa Clara. Included was a career-high 22 points against Portland State on Dec. 9, 2017 (a PSU win).
Â
TALKING THE WALKER
The Vikings' other graduate transfer newcomer, SR F
Alonzo Walker, has started every game for PSU and been productive. In 25.2 minutes per night, he averages 10.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals.
• Walker has led the team in rebounding twice.
• Posted 13 points with nine rebounds and two blocked shots in the win at San Jose State.
• Scored 13 points with eight rebounds and two steals against Portland.
Â
YAHOO FOR NUHU
SR C
Sal Nuhu opened the season just as Vikings fans would have expected; by swatting away shots. Nuhu had six blocks against Puget Sound to go with 12 points and seven rebounds. Nuhu led the Big Sky Conference last season with 64 blocked shots (2.0 pg). That total ranked fourth in Portland State history for a season. Nuhu now has 73 career blocks, ranking fifth all-time at PSU.
