THE OPENING TIP
The inner-city basketball matchup of Portland State and Portland never fails to create interest in the local college basketball community, and the 2019 edition should be no different. Last season's contest, an 87-78 PSU win, drew the first-ever crowd of 2,000+ (2,020) at the new Viking Pavilion.
    Â
Portland State hosts the University of Portland on Wednesday night, once again at Viking Pavilion, looking for a fourth straight win in the series. The Vikings have opened the season 1-2, while the Pilots have a solid start at 3-1.
    Â
The Vikings carry a nine-game home court winning streak into the contest. PSU won the last eight in Viking Pavilion in 2018-19, and their first game this season. In addition, Portland State has lost only 10 non-conference home games in the last 13 seasons (54-10). PSU is 28-10 against Division I schools, and 26-0 against lower division schools over that span.
    Â
The Vikings come off an 83-75 loss at Hawai'i last Friday. It was a single-digit game the entire way, although Hawai'i led for most of it. The Rainbow Warriors simply out-shot the Vikings (51%-39%) from the field to secure the win.
    Â
SR G
Matt Hauser led PSU with 18 points and seven rebounds. He currently leads the team in scoring at 17.3 per contest. JR G
Holland Woods had 12 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists in the game. Woods is averaging 17.0 points and 4.0 assists per game.
    Â
PSU is still trying to find itself a bit in the early season. Battling some minor injuries and time zone changes (Indiana and Hawai'i) have been small hindrances. However, in all three games the Vikings have been able to create the frenetic pace they seek with their full-court pressure and relentless offensive rebounding.
    Â
This will be the lone home date for Portland State between Nov. 5 and Dec. 6, making it all the more important for the Vikings to play well and get a win. They are in the midst of a six-out-of-seven stretch away from home.
    Â
Wednesday's game with Portland tips off at 7:05 p.m. A live stream is available at Pluto TV Channel 532, www.pluto.tv and wwwWatchBigSky.com. Live statistics are available at www.ViksLive.com.

    Â
The Vikings next home game is Dec. 6 against CSUN.
Â
GAME NOTES: PORTLAND STATE vs. PORTLAND
• ALL-TIME SERIES: Portland leads the all-time series, 36-20. The Pilots lead 12-10 since Portland State resumed its program in 1996-97 and joined the Big Sky Conference (PSU did not have basketball from 1981-96). However, Portland State has won the last three meetings (2016 and 2017 at the Chiles Center and 2018 at Viking Pavilion)... PSU is 6-5 in home games against the Pilots and 4-7 in games played at the Chiles Center since '96-'97.
• LAST YEAR: Dec. 5, 2018 at Viking Pavilion, PSU 87, Portland 78: Holland "Boo Boo" Woods had one of his finest games of the season, scoring 27 points (8-14 FG, 5-7 3-pt, 6-6 FT) with six assists and three rebounds in leading the Vikings to their third straight win over the Pilots... Portland State outrebounded the Pilots 55-29 on the game and nearly had as many offensive rebounds (28) as the Pilots had total rebounds. The advantage on the glass led to 28 second chance points for PSU. The Viking bench also outscored Portland's bench 32-15...
Sal Nuhu added 10 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots for the Vikings... JoJo Walker led Portland with 17 points and seven assists.
• PORTLAND STATE vs. THE WEST COAST CONFERENCE: Portland State is 40-74 all-time against the West Coast Conference... PSU will play three members of the conference this season (Portland; at Pepperdine on Dec. 17; at Loyola Marymount on Dec. 19).
• COACHES: Vikings Coach
Barret Peery (Southern Utah, 1996) is in his third season on the Park Blocks and has a 37-32 career record. Peery is 2-0 against Portland and 4-3 against members of the WCC... Peery's only other head coaching experience is at the junior college level where he was 178-30 in six seasons (2005-08, College of Southern Idaho; 2011-14, Indian Hills (IA) CC)... the Pilots are coached by Terry Porter (Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 1985) in his fourth season. Porter, a former Portland Trail Blazers star, has also been a head coach in the NBA. He is 31-70 at Portland, 0-3 against the Vikings.
• GEVING RETURNS: Former Portland State Head Coach Tyler Geving is now an assistant coach on the Portland staff. Geving was head coach at PSU from 2009-17, compiling a 112-133 career record. Geving had the second-longest tenure (8 years) of any head coach in PSU history. He was an assistant for the Vikings from 2005-09.Â
Â
PORTLAND PILOTS
• The University of Portland is a member of the West Coast Conference.
• Last year, Portland was 7-25 overall, 0-16 in WCC play. The Pilots return two starters and nine letterwinners from that team.
• The Pilots have started the season at 3-1, winning two at home and going 1-1 on the road. Wins have come over Willamette, San Jose State and Maine. The only loss was at USC.
• Guards JoJo Walker and Isaiah White have paced the Pilots so far. Walker is averaging 13.8 points and 2.8 assists per game. He has made 10-20 from three-point range. White averages 13.5 points and has hit 8-20 from distance.
• Forward Tahirou Diabate averages 9.3 points and a team-high 4.8 rebounds per game.
• Chase Adams, a freshman guard, leads the team with 5.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game.
Â
SUSTAINABLE AND RECYCLABLE VIKING QUICK NOTES
WINNING LINES
• Portland State is 1-2 on the season, 1-0 at home, 0-2 on the road.
• The Vikings have won nine in a row at home dating to last season.
• PSU has lost four in a row away from home dating to last season.
• In 2018-19, PSU was 16-16, 12-4 at home, 3-10 on the road, 1-2 at neutral sites... PSU's 11-9 conference record was its best since going 11-9 in 2013-14. The Vikings were 8-2 at home, 3-7 on the road... PSU was 1-1 in overtime.
Home Court(s)
• Portland State opened the Viking Pavilion at the Peter W. Stott Center in 2018-19. The Stoller Family Court is PSU's fifth (and hopefully final) home court since joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996-97. Previously, the main home court was the old Peter W. Stott Center. However, the Vikings also used the Rose Garden (now Moda Center) and Memorial Coliseum occasionally over the years. In 2017-18, PSU used Lewis & Clark College's Pamplin Sports Center as a home court while the Viking Pavilion was being completed. Here is the breakdown:
 - Viking Pavilion - 17 games, 13-4
 - Peter W. Stott Center - 233 games, 168-65
 - Rose Garden (Moda Center) - 28 games, 19-9
 - Memorial Coliseum - 19 games, 13-6
 - Lewis and Clark - 12 games, 7-5
 - 24th season - 309 games, 220-89 at home overall
• Portland State has lost only 10 non-conference home games in the last 13 seasons (54-10). PSU is 28-10 against Division I schools, and 26-0 against lower division schools over that span.

• JR C
Sal Nuhu has nine blocked shots through three games, including a career-high tying six against Puget Sound. He currently leads the Big Sky Conference (3.0).
• Portland State has won nine straight home games at Viking Pavilion.
Â
WHO IS NOT

Â
BOO BOO ON THE VERGE
Portland State point guard Holland "Boo Boo" Woods is on the verge of becoming the number one helper in Viking basketball history. Woods has 368 career assists in 68 games (5.4 pg). That total has him ranked fourth all-time at PSU. Woods, a junior, is only 53 assists away from the record held by Terry Adolph in 1976-78. Adolph was a prolific assist man in his two-season career at PSU, no doubt benefiting from having the second all-time leading scorer in NCAA history playing alongside him in Freeman Williams. Adolph averaged 7.8 assists per game in each of his two seasons, totaling 421 in 54 games. Behind Adolph is teammate Chucky Smith (1974-78, 392 assists) and "modern-era" star Derek Nesland (1996-2000, 371 assists).
    Â
As for Woods, at his current pace he would break the Portland State assist mark some time in late December of this season.
    Â
Woods is also on pace to reach 1,000 career points in late December. He would be the 19th Viking in history to reach that milestone (currently 873).
    Â
And finally, Woods now has 109 career steals, ranking seventh all-time at PSU. The school record is 128 by Calaen Robinson (2015-17). Woods would be on pace to set that record later this season.

Â
HAUSER FILLING A VOID
SR G
Matt Hauser is a graduate transfer from Santa Clara where he made 113 three-pointers in three seasons. The hope for Hauser is that he will provide that kind of production for a Viking team that was sub-par from outside last season. So far, so good.

• Has led the team in scoring twice this season.
• Scored a season-high 21 points at Indiana (7-9 FG, 4-6 3-pt, 3-3 FT).
• He averaged 8.4 points and 2.4 assists in his 85-game career at Santa Clara. Included was a career-high 22 points against Portland State on Dec. 9, 2017 (a PSU win).
Â
YAHOO FOR NUHU
SR C
Sal Nuhu opened the season just as Vikings fans would have expected; by swatting away shots. Nuhu had six blocks against Puget Sound to go with 12 points and seven rebounds. Nuhu led the Big Sky Conference last season with 64 blocked shots (2.0 pg). That total ranked fourth in Portland State history for a season. Nuhu now has 73 career blocks, ranking fifth all-time at PSU.
