Box Score There are few home field advantages greater than playing at an altitude of nearly 7,000 feet, something that Northern Arizona proved once again to be true on Friday night. The Lumberjacks scored a pair of second half goals to beat Portland State 2-0 and improve to 10-0-3 against the Vikings in Flagstaff.
The Vikings came out the stronger team in the first half behind a couple of players who entered this weekend with momentum. Rilee Castilla, who scored the game-winning goal in last Sunday's match against Idaho State, had a shot in the fourth minute that was blocked.
Sofi Papastamos, the lone goal scorer in last week's game against Weber State, also had a shot that forced a save from Northern Arizona's goalkeeper Taryn Benham. The onslaught continued from the Vikings, who attempted five shots in the opening 23 minutes. But after a quick start, Portland State cooled off significantly. They would attempt just four shots over the final 67 minutes and didn't attempt a single corner kick in the match.
The Northern Arizona attack was met by Abbie Faingold, who delivered a stellar first-half performance. She made three saves in the first half and dealt nicely with a couple of Lumberjacks corners.
In the second half, however, it was a different story. Ana Rivera opened the scoring for NAU in the 53rd minute with a one-timer off a cross and Kayla Terhune made it 2-0 with a shot into the upper left from 20 yards out.
Faingold finished the game with four saves and the offense attempted nine shots, putting five of them on goal.
The Vikings will now take on Southern Utah on Sunday in a game with dramatic postseason implications. The Thunderbirds picked up their first Big Sky Conference win against Sacramento State on Friday and now sit in a tie with Portland State at three points.
MATCH NOTES: The Vikings trail in the all-time series 14-7-5 and have a 0-10-3 record in games played in Flagstaff … PSU had a two-match winning streak against NAU snapped.
