PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland State senior
Nathan Boniel battled through an illness all the way to the third set of the championship match at the West Hills Racquet & Fitness Club Sunday, but was then forced to retire, ceding the West Hills Open singles title to Andrew Newell of the University of Portland.
Â
Boniel and Newell were on serve in the third set when Boniel retired. Boniel leveled the match with a dominant, 6-1 win in the second set, after Newell took the first set, 6-3. Newell broke to open the third set, but Boniel broke right back to get back on serve immediately. Boniel retired a few games later with the match still on serve at 3-3 in the third.
Â
It didn't help that Boniel had already played a three-set match earlier in the day, after he beat fifth-seeded Cash Hanzlik 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals at 9 a.m. Additionally, the championship match got moved up 90 minutes to accommodate Newell, who also qualified for the championship match in doubles, forcing Boniel to play back-to-back matches.
Â
Boniel and the rest of the Portland State men's tennis team will be back in action Jan. 12 for their dual-season opener against the University of Oregon. The Vikings and Ducks square off in Eugene, Ore., at 3 p.m. (PT).
