PORTLAND, Ore. — Fresh off a 2-0 win over Southern Utah in its Big Sky opener last Friday, the Portland State women's soccer team heads out on the road for the first time in Big Sky play with road matches at Weber State and Idaho State this weekend.
Â
The Vikings had a near-perfect start to Big Sky play against the Thunderbirds, as they won 2-0 on a pair of second-half goals from Katie Foree and
Diamond Quinn. Forsee opened the scoring in the 74th minute, and then assisted on Quinn's goal less than five minutes later in the 79th minute.
Â
Forsee will likely be a key part of every win for the Vikings this season. The Vikings are 4-0-0 when Forsee scores this season, and 0-5-0 when she doesn't. Additionally, Forsee has accounted for three of the Vikings' four game-winning goals this season, and has either scored or assisted on seven of the team's 16 goals this season.
Â
Forsee leads the team with six goals so far this season, tying her for the Big Sky lead with UND's Katie Moller. Forsee also ranks tied with Moller for the Big Sky lead in points with 13 (6g, 1a), and leads the conference outright in points per game (1.44), goals per game (0.67), shots per game (4.89) and game-winning goals (0.33). Additionally, Forsee ranks in the top 20 of the NCAA in shots on goal per game (8th nationally), shots per game (12th nationally) and game-winning goals (tied for 17th nationally).
Â
Forsee stands on the verge of breaking a couple of Portland State records, both of which could fall this weekend. Forsee needs just two more shots on goal to match the current record of 73 that Dolly Enneking set from 2006-09. Forsee also moved into a tie for third all time with her seventh game-winning goal against the Thunderbirds last Friday, just one goal off the current record of eight that Enneking and Frankie Ross (2007-10) share. Additionally, Forsee would finish with the season records for points per game (1.44), goals per game (0.67), shots per game (4.89) and shots on goal per game (2.56) if the season ended today.
Â
Forsee came up big for the Vikings during their last road weekend in Big Sky play going back to last season. Forsee scored the game-winners in a pair of 1-0 wins at Northern Colorado and North Dakota, leading the Vikings to their first six-point conference road weekend since 2013.
Â
The Vikings will need more of that this weekend, as they head to Weber State and Idaho State – two teams that have beaten the Vikings in their most recent home matches against Portland State.
Â
The Vikings open the weekend with a night match against the Wildcats Friday. The Wildcats head into the match on a seven-match losing streak, including a pair of 1-0 road losses to Northern Colorado and North Dakota last weekend.
Â
The Wildcats have been shut out in their last four matches, and have only scored three goals total so far this season.
Â
The Bengals had their own eight-match losing streak before breaking through with a 2-1 win in double overtime against Northern Colorado last Sunday. The Bengals gave up the lead on an 87th-minute goal, but then won the match as Michaela Didericksen scored a golden goal in the 103rd minute.
Â
The Bengals and Vikings also share a common opponent in Chicago State, which both teams beat earlier this season. The Bengals beat the Cougars 3-0 to open their season on Aug. 18, while the Vikings broke a program record for largest margin of victory with an 8-0 win over the Cougars on Sept. 10.
Â
The Vikings will face a tight turnaround against the Bengals Sunday, as they play at 1 p.m. (MT) in Pocatello, Idaho, just over 36 hours after they play the Wildcats in Ogden, Utah, at 7 p.m. (MT) Friday.
Â
The Vikings handled a similar tight turnaround well when they beat Northern Colorado and North Dakota last season, however. And if Forsee can match her performance from that last road trip when the Vikings play this weekend, then the Vikings' hot start to Big Sky play will continue.

SCOUTING WEBER STATE:
The Weber State Wildcats (1-9-0, 0-2-0 Big Sky) head into the weekend on a seven-match losing streak, which included a pair of 1-0 losses to Northern Colorado and North Dakota as they opened Big Sky play last weekend. The Wildcats have been shut out in their last four matches, and have only scored three goals total so far this season. The Wildcats' lone win came via a 1-0 victory over North Dakota State at home on Aug. 25.
Â
The Wildcats have a young team with only 10 upperclassmen to go along with 13 freshmen.
Â
Morgan Quarnberg, Haley Thomas and Kelsi Jones have scored the Wildcats' three goals so far this season, while Madison Garlock has recorded the team's one assist. Garlock also leads the team with 28 shots and 12 shots on goal, while Quarnberg ranks second to her in both categories with 15 shots and eight shots on goal.
Â
Garlock returned to the Wildcats after earning All-Big Sky second-team honors last season. Junior defender Olivia Glassford also returned after being named an All-Big Sky honorable mention.
Â
Senior Sydnie Brough and redshirt sophomore Nikki Pittman have split time in goal for the Wildcats this season, though Brough has started the Wildcats' last three matches including both Big Sky matches last weekend. Brough leads the Wildcats with a 1.54 goals-against average and .778 save percentage, ahead of Pittman, who ranks second with a 1.66 goals-against average and .684 save percentage.
Â
ALL-TIME SERIES VERSUS WEBER STATE:
The Vikings took the lead in the all-time series between them and the Wildcats with their dramatic, 2-1 win in overtime last season. The Vikings lead the series 10-9-4, and have only lost once in their last 10 matches against the Wildcats. The Vikings lost in their last road match against the Wildcats, however, as Weber State beat the Vikings 4-1 in 2015.
Â
SCOUTING IDAHO STATE:
The Idaho State Bengals (2-8-0, 1-1-0 Big Sky) snapped an eight-match losing streak with a 2-1 win in double overtime against Northern Colorado last Sunday. Northern Colorado tied the game at 1-1 in the 87th minute of the match, but then won the match as Michaela Didericksen scored a golden goal in the 103rd minute. The Bears lost their Big Sky opener against North Dakota on Friday, as the Fighting Hawks scored two quick goals to win 2-0. UND scored the first goal on a penalty kick within the first minute of the match, and then tacked on another goal in the 10th minute.
Â
The Bengals returned 18 of 22 letterwinners from last season, as well as eight of 11 starters.
Â
The Bengals have been outscored 21-6 across their 10 matches this season, and they have yet to shut out an opponent.
Â
Michaela Didericksen and Makena Bambei rank tied for the team lead with two goals each this season, while Kathryn Leachman and Meaghan Bare have added a goal each as well. Didericksen and Leachman also rank tied with Christina Krieger, Corinne Sanderson and Tristen Spooner for the team lead in assists with one each. Didericksen led the Bengals with seven goals last season.
Â
Junior Shawna Hennings has started all 10 matches for the Bengals in goal this season, and has a 1.95 goals-against average and .757 save percentage.
Â
The Bengals and Vikings share a common opponent in Chicago State, which both teams beat earlier this season. The Bengals beat Chicago State 3-0 on the road on Aug. 18, while the Vikings broke the program record for biggest margin of victory with an 8-0 win at home on Sept. 10.
Â
ALL-TIME SERIES VERSUS IDAHO STATE:
The Vikings lead the all-time series between them and Idaho State, 10-9-1. The Vikings had won three in a row and nine of their last 10 against the Bengals before last season, when Idaho State beat the Vikings, 3-2, on a golden goal in double overtime.
Â
LAST TIME OUT:
The Vikings opened their Big Sky schedule with a 2-0 win over Southern Utah last Friday. Senior
Katie Forsee accounted for both goals in the match, as she scored the go-ahead goal in the 74th minute, and then assisted on
Diamond Quinn's goal in the 79th minute. Forsee's goal marked the sixth of the season for the senior captain, who also moved into a tie for fifth all time in career goals at Portland State. Forsee matched her former teammate Cori Bianchini with her 13th career goal at Portland State, and also tied Bianchini for third all time with her seventh game-winning goal in the match. Forsee will match the all-time record with her next game-winning goal, which would equal her with Frankie Ross (2007-10) and Dolly Enneking (2006-09) at eight. Quinn, meanwhile, scored her first career goal in the match on a beautiful shot from distance. Quinn fired from 35 yards out, catching Southern Utah's goalkeeper out of position as the ball sailed into the upper left part of the net. Redshirt junior goalkeeper
Abbie Faingold also finished with three saves while recording her fourth shutout of the season in the match.
Â
UPCOMING:
The Vikings return home for a pair of matches next weekend. The Vikings will host Northern Arizona Friday, Oct. 6, and Sacramento State Sunday, Oct. 8. Both matches will kick off at 1 p.m. (PT) at Hillsboro Stadium.
Â
THE FORCE-E IS WITH THE VIKINGS:
Katie Forsee is on pace for a record-breaking senior season. Forsee shares the Big Sky lead in points (13) and goals (6) so far this season, and leads the Big Sky in points per game (1.44), goals per game (0.67), game-winning goals (3) and shots per game (4.89). Forsee's strong start to the season has her on pace to break a number of Portland State season records. If the season ended today, Forsee would finish with the single-season records for points per game, goals per game, shots per game and shots on goal per game. Forsee is also on pace to break the single-season records for total shots and shots on goal, and could break the record for goals in a season if she matches her same production level – six goals in nine matches – that she had during the first half of the season. Forsee stands on the verge of breaking two career records, as well. Forsee needs just two more shots on goal to match the current record of 73 that Dolly Enneking set from 2006-09. Additionally, Forsee moved into a tie for third all time with her seventh game-winning goal last Friday, just one goal off the current record of eight that Enneking and Frankie Ross (2007-10) share. Forsee also ranks in the top 10 all time at Portland State in points (tied for 7th with 32), goals (tied for 5th with 13) and shots (tied for 3rd with 136).
Â
ISOBE IS SO BAE:
Sophomore midfielder
Kasey Isobe had a match to remember against Chicago State on Sept. 10. Isobe tied the program record for points in a match with eight on three goals and two assists, and did it all in only 30 minutes of playing time. For the season, Isobe ranks second to
Katie Forsee on the team in points (10) and goals (4), and leads the team with two assists. Isobe also ranks second to Forsee in the Big Sky in points per game (1.30), and ranks third in the conference in goals per game (0.57).
Â
STAY FAIN-GOLD, PONYBOY:
Redshirt junior goalkeeper
Abbie Faingold has four shutouts in nine matches this season, ranking her tied for the Big Sky lead in total shutouts and shutouts per game (0.44). Faingold also ranks fourth in the Big Sky with 45 total saves, and ranks tied for fourth in the conference with an average of 5.00 saves per game. Additionally, Faingold has moved into the career top 10s in four different categories at Portland State, as she ranks tied for sixth in shutouts (9), seventh in goalkeeper wins (9) and ninth in both saves (114) and goals-against average (1.75).
Â
KATIE BURTON ERA:
The
Katie Burton era opened for the Vikings with the team's match against cross-town rival and national powerhouse University of Portland on Aug. 18. Burton came to the Vikings after serving as the associate head coach at her alma mater Sacramento State, where she led a program turnaround in just over two years there. The Hornets hadn't made the Big Sky tournament in four seasons before Burton's arrival, but made the Big Sky tournament in their first year under Burton in 2015. Burton led the Hornets to a second-place finish last season, when they clinched the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the Big Sky tournament with a 2-1 win over the Vikings in both teams' regular-season finale.
Â
NEWCOMERS:
The Vikings added 13 newcomers to their roster in 2017, including seven from Oregon. Additionally, the Vikings added two players from Washington, two players from Arizona, and a player each from California and Idaho. Of the 13 newcomers, 11 came into the season as freshman, while
Tiegan Horton and
Molly Joyce enter as junior and sophomore transfers, respectively. The 11 freshman for the Vikings are:
Rilee Castilla,
Megan Cornett,
Paige Donathan,
Liz Hansen,
Mya Lopez,
Tasi Poore, Teá Poore,
Kendall Pope,
Diamond Quinn,
Ellie Vasey,
Teri Walters.
Â
2016 SEASON RECAP:
The Portland State Vikings came within a game of returning to the Big Sky tournament last season. The Vikings entered their regular-season finale against Sacramento State with the chance to clinch a spot in the tournament with a win, only to fall to the Hornets, 2-1. The season-ending loss put a damper on what had been a strong, and at times dramatic, push by the Vikings to make the tournament. The Vikings entered their final road weekend four points out of the sixth and final playoff spot, and had lost eight straight Big Sky road matches at that point. The Vikings pulled out a pair of 1-0 wins at Northern Colorado and North Dakota, however, giving them their first six-point conference road weekend since 2013. The true magic followed the following weekend when then-senior
Breanne Chilton-Eddy scored a golden goal on her own Senior Day against Weber State on a magical shot that ESPN ran on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays that night. The Vikings also came back to beat the Wildcats after giving up the first goal – the first time they had done that since 2013.
