Vikings Take Momentum Into Final Non-Conference Match against Seattle

Complete Match Notes (PDF)

PORTLAND, Ore. —
It's easy to tell who has the momentum when a team scores eight goals. That was the Portland State women's soccer team last Sunday, and the Vikings will look to continue that momentum in their final non-conference match of the season this Sunday against Seattle.

The Vikings are coming off an 8-0 win over Chicago State last Sunday, a match in which the Vikings tied a program record for most goals, set a program record for largest margin of victory, and had two players – Katie Forsee and Kasey Isobe – record a hat trick in the same match for the first time.

Isobe also tied the program record for points in a match with eight on three goals and two assists against Chicago State, and did it all in only 30 minutes of playing time. Isobe earned Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week for the feat, while teammate Maxine Nagramada earned Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week honors to make it a clean sweep for the Vikings.

Forsee's hat trick gave her five goals on the season, the most of any player in the Big Sky this season. Forsee and Isobe also sit tied atop the Big Sky rankings in points with 10 each, while Isobe leads the conference with an average of 2.00 points per game.

Forsee also moved up the all-time rankings at Portland State with her performance against Chicago State. Forsee ranks second all time in shots on goal with 65, just eight behind the current record of 73 that Dolly Enneking set from 2006-09. Forsee also ranks fourth all-time in game-winning goals with six, two behind the record of eight that Enneking and Frankie Ross (2007-10) currently share.

Seattle will challenge the Vikings' momentum Sunday, however. The Redhawks lost to Santa Clara, 4-1, in their last match, but had beaten Pacific (Calif.), Hawai'i and Idaho by a combined scored of 10-3 before that. The Redhawks beat Pacific 3-0 in a neutral-site match on Aug. 26, just over a week before Pacific beat the Vikings 3-1 in Stockton, Calif.

Seattle has also beaten one Big Sky school already this season, after coming back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Idaho 5-3 on Sept. 4.

The Vikings and Redhawks will kick off at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hillsboro Stadium.

SCOUTING SEATTLE:
The Seattle Redhawks (3-3-0) had a three-match winning streak snapped with a 4-1 loss to Santa Clara Monday. Before that, the Redhawks had beaten Pacific (Calif.), Hawai'i and Idaho by a combined score of 10-3. The Redhawks beat Pacific (Calif.) 3-0 in a neutral-site match in Hawai'i on Aug. 26, just over a week before Pacific beat the Vikings 3-1 in Stockton, Calif. The Vikings and Redhawks also share a common opponent in Oregon State, which beat Seattle 2-1 in Seattle on Aug. 20, and then beat Portland State 1-0 in overtime in Corvallis last Friday. Additionally, Seattle beat Idaho, out of the Big Sky, 5-3 on Sept. 4, after rallying back from a 2-0 deficit in the match.

Leahi Manthei was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, after setting a new Division I school record for Seattle with four goals against Idaho. Manthei and Jessie Ray, who herself was named the WAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 4, share the team lead in goals scored this season with four each. Outside of them, four other players have scored a goal each this season for the Redhawks in Jennifer Plummer, Holly Rothering, Natasha Howe and Madeline Racine.

Hannah Carrothers leads the Redhawks with three assists on the season, while Plummer, Isabelle Butterfield and Stephanie Spiekerman all have two each.

Nine of the Redhawks' 12 goals this season have come in the second half. Oddly, nine of the 11 goals opponents have scored against the Redhawks this season have come in the first half.

Mackenzie Curry has started all six matches for the Redhawks in goal, and has a 2.00 goals-against average and .542 save percentage on the season.

Seattle made the NCAA tournament last season for the third time in the past four seasons. The Redhawks lost Brie Hooks off last year's team, after she earned WAC Offensive Player of the Year and All-WAC first-team honors, as well as being named to the NSCAA All-West Region second team. Spiekerman returns after being named WAC Defensive Player of the Year, and to the All-WAC first team. Howe and Rosalie Sittauer also return after earning All-WAC first- and second-team honors last season.

ALL-TIME SERIES VERSUS SEATTLE:
The Vikings have never beaten Seattle and will take an 0-4-4 all-time record against the Redhawks into Sunday's match. The Vikings and Redhawks last played in 2012, when the Redhawks beat the Vikings 1-0 in Seattle. The Vikings have lost their last three matches to the Redhawks, including their last home match, which came in 2011. The Vikings' last point against the Redhawks came via a 1-1 draw at home in 2009.

LAST TIME OUT:
The Vikings put together their best weekend of the season to date last week behind a record-breaking 8-0 win over Chicago State on Sunday, and a narrow, 1-0 overtime loss to Pac-12 foe Oregon State on Friday. The Vikings held the Beavers without a goal throughout regulation on Friday night, only to concede the game-winning goal in the fourth minute of overtime. The Vikings were sure to get on the right end of the result against Chicago State on Sunday, however, as they tied a program record with eight goals in the match, while setting a new program record for largest margin of victory (8-0). Katie Forsee and Kasey Isobe each finished with hat tricks in the match, making them the first Viking teammates to record hat tricks in the same match. Additionally, Isobe tied a program record with eight points on three goals and two assists, and did it all in only 30 minutes of playing time. Forsee got the scoring started for the Vikings with a goal just 33 seconds into the match – the third-fastest goal from the start of a match in program history. Isobe scored the next goal on assists from Krystal de Ramos and Jade Rafallo, and Isobe followed with an assist on Forsee's second goal, which came just two seconds before the end of the first half. The Vikings followed with a five-goal second half – the second-most goals the Vikings have ever scored in a half – with Isobe either scoring or assisting on three of them.

UPCOMING:
The Vikings open Big Sky play at home against Southern Utah next Friday at 1 p.m.

ISOBE, NAGRAMADA SWEEP BIG SKY PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS:
Kasey Isobe and Maxine Nagramada swept the Big Sky Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors Tuesday, after each contributed to the Vikings' record-breaking 8-0 win over Chicago State last Sunday. The sweep marks the first the Vikings have taken home both Player of the Week awards in a single week since Lynsey Gaines and Kayla Henningsen swept them on Oct. 8, 2013. Additionally, both Isobe and Nagramada earned their first Big Sky Player of the Week honors with Tuesday's sweep. Isobe earned the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week honor after tying the program record for points in a match with eight against Chicago State on three goals and two assists. Isobe and Katie Forsee also became the first Viking teammates to record hat tricks in the same match, while the pair either scored or assisted on seven of the team's record-tying eight goals in the match. The other goal came from Nagramada, who scored what was perhaps the goal of the match in the 55th minute. Nagramada took the ball from 35 yards out and knifed through the Chicago State defense before slotting a shot past the goalkeeper for her first collegiate goal.

THE FORCE-E IS WITH THE VIKINGS:
Portland State fans would not blame senior midfielder Katie Forsee for being a tad bit bitter after Sunday's record-setting 8-0 win over Chicago State. After all, Forsee finished off a hat trick with a goal in the 74th minute against the Cougars, making her the first Viking to record a hat trick since Eryn Brown on Sept. 1, 2013. Forsee's feat was upstaged just over 14 minutes later, however, when Kasey Isobe matched her with her third goal of the match, which is also gave Isobe her eighth point (3g, 2a), tying the record that Brown set in the same match on Sept. 1, 2013. Regardless, Forsee still stands as the Vikings' and Big Sky's leading goal scorer this season with five, the same total she finished last season with, when she tied with Krystal de Ramos for the team lead. And while Isobe inadvertently upstaged Forsee's historic accomplishment against Chicago State, no one comes close to upstaging Forsee in the career record books, where she's poised to set a number of records this season. Forsee moved into 10th place all time in points (29) with her three goals last Sunday, and also moved into a tie for sixth all time in goals scored (12). Forsee also ranks sixth all time in shots with 126, and ranks fourth all time in game-winning goals with six – just two behind the current record of eight that Frankie Ross (2007-10) and Dolly Enneking (2006-09) currently share. Forsee could break both records by the end of the season, as well as the record for shots on goal, which she stands closest to breaking after recording five in the Vikings' win over Chicago State last Sunday. Forsee ranks second all time in shots on goal with 65, eight behind the current record holder, Enneking, at 73.

ISOBE IS SO BAE:
Sophomore midfielder Kasey Isobe had a match to remember against Chicago State last Sunday. Isobe tied the program record for points in a match with eight on three goals and two assists, and did it all in only 30 minutes of playing time. Isobe now ranks tied with Katie Forsee for the team and conference lead in points with 10 (4g, 2a), while Isobe ranks alone atop the conference in points per game (2.00). Isobe also leads the Big Sky in goals per game (0.80), one spot ahead of Forsee (0.71), who leads the conference in total goals scored with five, one ahead of Isobe at four.

STAY FAIN-GOLD, PONYBOY:
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Abbie Faingold has three shutouts in seven matches this season, ranking her tied for second in the Big Sky. Faingold leads the Big Sky with 5.00 saves per match, and has twice finished with eight saves in a match. Additionally, Faingold ranks sixth in the Big Sky in goals-against average (1.11), and fourth in the conference in save percentage (.814).

KATIE BURTON ERA:
The Katie Burton era opened for the Vikings with the team's match against cross-town rival and national powerhouse University of Portland on Aug. 18. Burton came to the Vikings after serving as the associate head coach at her alma mater Sacramento State, where she led a program turnaround in just over two years there. The Hornets hadn't made the Big Sky tournament in four seasons before Burton's arrival, but made the Big Sky tournament in their first year under Burton in 2015. Burton led the Hornets to a second-place finish last season, when they clinched the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the Big Sky tournament with a 2-1 win over the Vikings in both teams' regular-season finale.

NEWCOMERS:
The Vikings added 13 newcomers to their roster in 2017, including seven from Oregon. Additionally, the Vikings added two players from Washington, two players from Arizona, and a player each from California and Idaho. Of the 13 newcomers, 11 came into the season as freshman, while Tiegan Horton and Molly Joyce enter as junior and sophomore transfers, respectively. The 11 freshman for the Vikings are: Rilee Castilla, Megan Cornett, Paige Donathan, Liz Hansen, Mya Lopez, Tasi Poore, Teá Poore, Kendall Pope, Diamond Quinn, Ellie Vasey, Teri Walters.

2016 SEASON RECAP:
The Portland State Vikings came within a game of returning to the Big Sky tournament last season. The Vikings entered their regular-season finale against Sacramento State with the chance to clinch a spot in the tournament with a win, only to fall to the Hornets, 2-1. The season-ending loss put a damper on what had been a strong, and at times dramatic, push by the Vikings to make the tournament. The Vikings entered their final road weekend four points out of the sixth and final playoff spot, and had lost eight straight Big Sky road matches at that point. The Vikings pulled out a pair of 1-0 wins at Northern Colorado and North Dakota, however, giving them their first six-point conference road weekend since 2013. The true magic followed the following weekend when then-senior Breanne Chilton-Eddy scored a golden goal on her own Senior Day against Weber State on a magical shot that ESPN ran on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays that night. The Vikings also came back to beat the Wildcats after giving up the first goal – the first time they had done that since 2013.
