FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The Portland State men's tennis team ran into the lion's den Saturday, losing 7-0 to Big Sky-leading Northern Arizona on the Lumberjacks' home court at the Aquatic and Tennis Complex.
 
The Lumberjacks (12-7, 7-1 Big Sky) won five of their six singles matches against the Vikings (3-13, 1-8 Big Sky) in straight sets, and won the two completed doubles matches, as well.
 
Senior Scott Goldner was the lone Viking to win a set in singles, as he pulled out a first-set tiebreaker, 7-5, over NAU's Sebastian Eguez at line three. Eguez rebounded to beat Goldner, 6-2, in the second set, however, and then won their ensuing match tiebreaker, 10-5.
 
Northern Arizona also pulled out the headlining match of the day at line one, where the Vikings' Nathan Boniel – the 2016 Big Sky MVP – faced NAU's Tim Handel, who entered the match undefeated in Big Sky play. Boniel beat Handel in three sets last season, but Handel got the better of Boniel this time around, as he stayed undefeated with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Boniel at the top of the singles lineup.
 
Boniel and the Vikings have a chance to bounce right back tomorrow, however, as they play Southern Utah in Cedar City, Utah, at 11 a.m. (MT).
 
Match Notes: The Vikings fell to 2-12 all-time against Northern Arizona following Saturday's loss…Freshman Tommy Edwards lost Saturday, but still has a chance to break the single-season record for wins at line two if he can pull out wins in the Vikings' final two matches of the season.
