THE OPENING TIP
The pre-Christmas Wish List for Viking basketball fans has something new on it this season: 10 wins. Much like Santa on Sunday night, Viking fans will see if the Portland State basketball team can deliver.

The Vikings (9-3) play the Cal Bears in Berkeley Thursday in their final non-conference game with a chance to get to 10 wins, something PSU has never done before Christmas in its basketball history. Portland State's previous best pre-Christmas records are 9-4 (2006-07) and 9-3 (2008-09). In addition, PSU's best non-conference win total in its 22-season Big Sky Conference history is 10, as in 10-5 in 2008-09. Very simply, a win on Thursday would give PSU its best non-conference winning percentage ever (.769). Consider that possibility a stocking stuffer.

Getting that 10th win will be no easy task as the Vikings take on another Pac-12 opponent on the road. The Cal Bears are 5-6 going into a Tuesday game at Seattle University. They have the advantage of being a power-conference member of playing at home when they meet the Vikings. It will be just the second meeting between the two schools, and the first in 20 years. PSU will be playing its third Pac-12 opponent of the preseason. The Vikings have a win over Stanford (87-78) and a loss at Oregon (95-84).

Portland State comes off a 116-71 win over Division III Linfield College on Saturday. The Vikings were playing their only home game in a span of 40 days that includes seven road games. The Vikings have won three of the first four in that run, beating Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara on the road, then losing to Oregon last Wednesday in Eugene.

The Vikings are 4-0 in home games this season, 4-1 in road games and 1-2 in neutral site games. They have garnered attention locally and nationally. Portland State was ranked 24th in last week's collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Top 25. The Vikings are the highest-ranked Big Sky Conference team.

Thursday's game will be the sixth televised game of the season for Portland State. Tip-off is 8 p.m. at Haas Pavilion and the game will air on the Pac-12 Network.  Live stats are available at www.ViksLive.com.

COMING UP
The Vikings are in the midst of playing seven of eight games on the road, leading into the first two weeks of Big Sky Conference play. The game at Cal is the fifth in that stretch and the fourth road game. PSU is 3-1 in the first four games.

Looking ahead, the Vikings will begin Big Sky Conference play at Sacramento State (Dec. 30), followed by games at Eastern Washington (Jan. 4) and Idaho (Jan. 6).

Portland State does not play a Big Sky Conference home game until Jan. 11 (Montana State).
