BOISE, Idaho — The most impressive thing about senior
Nathan Boniel is that he's still finding new ways to impress. Boniel did that again Sunday, as he became the Portland State men's tennis team's first-ever singles champion at the Dar Walters Fall Classic with a straight sets win in the final.
Â
Boniel beat out a deep field of 77 players to win the singles title, a year after he lost in the finals of the tournament. Boniel also became the first Viking to win two different tournaments in his career, as he also won the singles title at the Bulldog Classic last season.
Â
Boniel won six matches and beat three different Big Sky opponents en route to the title, including Montana's Victor Casadevall, who he beat 6-3, 6-4 in the final.
Â
Boniel had to comeback in his semifinal match earlier in the day Sunday, as he lost the first set against fifth-seeded Ruadhan O'Sullivan of Gonzaga, 6-4. Boniel rebounded with a 6-1 win in the second set to level the match, however, and then pulled out a close third set, 6-4, to advance to the final.
Â
Boniel and the Vikings will now take a week off before continuing their fall season at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships in Stockton, Calif., Oct. 19-23.
