BOISE, Idaho — The greatest Portland State men's tennis player of all time –
Nathan Boniel – played up to his billing again Saturday, as he advanced to the semifinals of the Dar Walters Fall Classic for the second straight season.
Boniel, who made the finals of the Dar Walters Fall Classic last season, qualified for this season's semifinals with a pair of wins Saturday. Boniel opened his day with a close, 6-4, 7-5 win over Idaho's Guilherme Scarpelli, and then beat 14th-seeded Vincent Rettke from Gonzaga in the quarterfinals. Boniel came back after dropping the second set to Rettke, 6-2, to win the ensuing match tiebreaker, 10-5.
Boniel will now face off against fifth-seeded Ruadhan O'Sullivan of Gonzaga in the semifinals at 11:30 a.m. If he wins that match, he'll advance to the championship match for the second straight season, where he'll face either sixth-seeded Mark Kovacs of Idaho or 12th-seeded Victor Casadevall of Montana. The championship match will start at 2:30 p.m. (PT).
Casadevall advanced to the semifinals thanks in part to a round-of-16 win over Portland State's own
Sam Roberts. Roberts was the lone Viking beside Boniel to make it that far in the singles draw, but lost to Casadevall 6-3, 6-1 in his first match of the day Saturday.
Sophomore
Tommy Edwards and junior
Avery West made the round of 16 in the doubles draw, and advanced to the quarterfinals Saturday with an 8-5 win over Matt Alderson and Adrian Alvarez-Sanabria of Seattle. Edwards and West then faced off against Idaho's Kovacs and Carlos Longhi Neto – the third seed in the doubles draw – in the quarterfinals later in the day, but lost 8-5.
The rest of the Vikings fell in their consolation singles matches Saturday.
