Boniel Leads Group of Winners for Vikings on First Day of Dar Walters Fall Classic

RESULTS

BOISE, Idaho —
Stop us if you've read this before: Nathan Boniel played impressively for the Portland State men's tennis team. Okay, we're sure you've read that before, but Boniel wasn't alone Friday as the Vikings opened their 2017 fall season with the first day of the Dar Walters Fall Classic, hosted by Boise State University.

Boniel, sophomore Tommy Edwards and newcomers Sam Roberts and Avery West all won matches for the Vikings on the first day of the tournament. West earned a dramatic doubles win with Edwards to open the day, while Boniel and Roberts each won two matches in singles to advance to tomorrow's round of 16.

Boniel, seeded fourth in the singles draw, opened singles play with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) win over a Pac-12 player in Oregon's Armando Soemarno. Boniel then followed it up with a straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 win over Eastern Washington's Jeremy Mueller, advancing him to the final 16.

Boniel will play Idaho's Guilherme Scarpelli in the round of 16 at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, the same time that Roberts will face off against 12th-seeded Victor Casadevall of Idaho. Should either Boniel or Roberts win their round of 16 matches, they'll play in the quarterfinals at 3:30 p.m.

Roberts advanced to the round of 16 after a pair of quality wins in his Viking debut Friday. Roberts opened with a dominant, 6-3, 6-0 win over Seattle's Matt Alderson, and then followed it up with a dramatic win over Eastern Washington's Scott Paz in a match tiebreaker. Roberts and Paz split a pair of close sets, with Paz winning the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6, before Roberts won the second set, 6-4. Roberts then pulled out an extremely close match tiebreaker over Paz, 11-9.

Edwards also won his first round singles match in a match tiebreaker, as he came back after losing the first set to beat Whitman's Andreas Mueller-Immergluck 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7). Edwards then faced off against 16th-seeded Tom Hann of the University of Portland and played a close second set before falling 6-2, 7-5.

Edwards' best win came in doubles, however, as he and West upset seventh-seeded Alex Canellopoulos and Yannick Schmidl of Montana, 9-7.

Edwards and West will now face off against Seattle's Alderson and Adrian Alvarez-Sanabria of Seattle in the round of 16 at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. If they win that match, they'll play a quarterfinal match at 9:30 a.m.

The rest of the Vikings fell in their opening singles and doubles matches Friday, but will be back in action in the consolation brackets Saturday.
