SPOKANE, Wash. — Even Superman had his kryptonite, and Portland State men's tennis player
Nathan Boniel met his Sunday, as he lost in three sets while battling through an illness in the semifinals of the Bulldog Classic.
Â
Boniel was playing against Sam Feit of host Gonzaga in the semifinals Sunday, and took an early lead in the match with a 6-3 win in the first set, but then couldn't finish off Feit in the second or third. Feit came back to pull out a close second set, 7-5, and then pulled out another close set in the third, 6-4.
Â
The loss does little to diminish Boniel's accomplishments during the 2017 fall season, when he became the first Viking to win the Dar Walters Fall Classic, as well as the first Viking to make the quarterfinals of the ITA Northwest Regional. Boniel also beat three players from Pac-12 schools during the fall, and will finish the fall season with a 12-2 record in singles.

Sophomore
Majeed Bukhari, meanwhile, stepped up to deliver a title for the Vikings Sunday, as he won the consolation bracket of the "B" singles flight. Bukhari beat Seattle's Alex Chan in straight sets – 7-5, 6-3 – to advance to the final, where he then beat Portland's Goutham Sundaram by default.
Â
Bukhari was also a consolation finalist at the Bulldog Classic last season as a freshman.
Â
The Vikings will now take the rest of the year off before returning to competition at the three-day West Hills Open, Jan 5-7, in Portland, Ore.
