SPOKANE, Wash. — With apologies to the Dodgers and Astros, it's not a fall classic if Portland State senior men's tennis player
Nathan Boniel isn't playing in it.
Â
Boniel – who has already made history this fall as the first Viking to win the Dar Walters Fall Classic and make the quarterfinals of the ITA Northwest Regional – advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles and doubles draws at the Bulldog Classic Friday.
Â
Boniel won the top singles flight at the Bulldog Classic last season, and kicked off his title defense with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Montana's Alex Canellopoulos in the "A" singles bracket. Boniel will now await the winner of a match between Idaho's Esteban Santibanez and Gonzaga's Vincent Rettke, who will play at 9:30 a.m. Saturday before facing Boniel in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. If Boniel wins his quarterfinal match, then he'll advance to the semifinals Sunday.
Â
Boniel will also be playing for a spot in Sunday's doubles semifinals tomorrow, after he and teammate
Sam Roberts beat Eastern Washington's Victor Pereira and Jeremy Field, 8-6. Boniel and Roberts will face Montana State's Rok Sitar and Alexander Flink in the quarterfinals at 8 a.m. Saturday, with the winner advancing to the semifinals Sunday at 9 a.m.
Â
Sophomore
Tommy Edwards could join Boniel in the quarterfinals of the "A" singles bracket, after advancing to the second round with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Montana State's Adrian Torrico Friday. Edwards will face Portland's Tom Hann at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, with the winner advancing to face Gonzaga's Ruadhan O'Sullivan in the quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m.
Â
Junior newcomer
Avery West also made the second round of the "B" singles flight, after beating Seattle's Matt Alderson in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. West will face Gonzaga's Bryan Husin in the second round at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, with the winner advancing to face Eastern Washington's Ricardo Almeida at 4 p.m.
Â
Edwards and West joined forces to make the second round of the doubles draw Friday, but lost their second match of the day to fall out of the draw. Edwards and West beat Gonzaga's Simon Homedes and Matt Perkins 8-5 Friday, but then lost to Montana's Canellopoulos and Yannick Schmidl 8-2 in the second round.
Â
The Vikings will also compete in the consolation draws of several brackets Saturday. Roberts will face off against Eastern Washington's Jeremy Field in the consolation draw of the "A" singles flight at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Â
Additionally,
Gabe Souza,
Otto Holtari and
Majeed Bukhari will all compete in the consolation draw of the "B" singles flight Saturday. Bukhari earned a bye into the second round of the consolation draw, and will face the winner of the match before him at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
Â
Souza and Holtari will have to win a match to join Bukhari in the second round, as they'll both begin play in the first round of the consolation draw at 1 p.m. Both Souza and Holtari will face off against players from Montana State in the first round of the consolation draw, with Souza playing Marcos Zelver while Holtari faces Mateus Ceolin.
Â
Souza and Holtari will also join forces in the consolation doubles draw Saturday, when they'll face off against Victor Casadevall and Ignacio Tejerina at 8:45 a.m.
