Boniel's Historic Run at ITA Northwest Regional Ends with Quarterfinal Loss

RESULTS (PDF)

STOCKTON, Calif. —
The process of rewriting history at some point has to end and become history itself. That was the case Sunday, when senior Nathan Boniel's historic run to the quarterfinals of the ITA Northwest Regional ended with a loss to fifth-seeded Jack Molloy of Cal.

Boniel lost 6-1, 6-3 to Molloy, who went on to win his semifinal match later in the day to advance to Monday's final.

No Viking had ever made it past the second round of the ITA Northwest Regional before Boniel, who not only made it past the second round, but also won two matches beyond that in making it to Sunday's quarterfinals. Boniel beat two players from Pac-12 schools in making it to the quarterfinals, as he beat Nikita Demir of Stanford in the first round and Dominic Barretto of Cal in the Round of 16. Boniel also beat Armando Soemarno of Oregon in the first round of the Dar Walters Fall Classic on Oct. 6 – a tournament Boniel would go on to win.

Boniel was the only Big Sky player to make it to the quarterfinals of the ITA Northwest Regional, and was the only player in the quarterfinals not from a Pac-12 or West Coast Conference school.

Boniel and the Vikings will close out their fall season next week at the Bulldog Classic in Spokane, Wash., Oct. 27-29. Boniel will enter the Bulldog Classic as the defending champion, after winning the top singles flight at last season's tournament.
