STOCKTON, Calif. — What do you do after you make history? You make it again. And then you make it again.
That's what Portland State men's tennis player
Nathan Boniel has done at the ITA Northwest Regional. Boniel became the first Viking ever to make the third round of the prestigious tournament Thursday, but then followed it up with two more wins and is now the first Viking to make the quarterfinals of the tournament after beating Dominic Barretto of Cal in the Round of 16 Saturday.
Â
Boniel's entire career has been one big rewrite of the Viking record books, as the senior has already made history as the Vikings' first Big Sky MVP, first two-time All-Big Sky first-team selection, and the Vikings' all-time leader in overall singles wins, wins at No. 1 singles, and overall singles win percentage.
Â
Boniel's advancement to the quarterfinals of the ITA Northwest Regional is a worthy accompaniment to that list of accomplishments. Boniel is the only Big Sky player to make the quarterfinals of this year's ITA Northwest Regional, as well as the only player not from a Pac-12 or West Coast Conference school.
Â
Boniel advanced to the quarterfinals after beating his second Pac-12 opponent of the tournament in Barretto. Boniel beat Barretto 6-2, 6-4 Saturday, after beating Nikita Demir of Stanford in the first round of the tournament on Thursday. Boniel also beat Armando Soemarno of Oregon in the first round of the Dar Walters Fall Classic on Oct. 6 – a tournament Boniel would again make history at as the Vikings' first-ever winner in singles.
Â
Boniel will face another Pac-12 opponent in the quarterfinals, as he faces off against Jack Molloy of Cal, the fifth seed in the singles draw. Boniel and Molloy will start their match at 12 p.m. Sunday, with the winner advancing to the semifinals at 3 p.m.

Sophomore
Tommy Edwards and freshman
Otto Holtari added two more wins for the Vikings, as they each won extra consolation singles matches Saturday. Both players won in straight sets, with Edwards beating Calvin Jordaan of Saint Mary's 6-2, 6-3, while Holtari beat Garner Sears of Big Sky-rival Eastern Washington, 6-0, 7-5.
Â
Three Vikings were also active in the third round of the consolation singles draw Saturday, but all three lost their matches to fall out of the draw.
