STOCKTON, Calif. — Everything about
Nathan Boniel's Portland State men's tennis career has been sweet. It's only fitting, then, that the Viking senior advanced to the Sweet 16 of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships Friday.
Â
Boniel – a day after becoming the first Viking ever to qualify for the third round at the ITA Northwest Regional – made it one step further with a three-set win over Santa Clara's Jesus Barajas. Boniel and Barajas played three close sets against each other Friday, with Boniel pulling a close third set, 6-4, to complete a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win.
Â
Boniel will now face Dominic Barretto of Cal in the Round of 16 at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow. Barretto is a sophomore for the Bears, who made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament as a team last season.
Â
Boniel has already beaten two Pac-12 opponents this fall, including a 6-1, 6-2 win over Stanford's Nikita Demir yesterday in the first round of the ITA Northwest Regional. Boniel also beat Armando Soemarno of Oregon in the first round of the Dar Walters Fall Classic, a tournament he went on to win.
Â
Boniel also won his first-round doubles match with teammate
Sam Roberts Friday, as the pair of them beat Matis Bot and Nash Vollenweider of Saint Mary's, 8-6. Boniel and Roberts lost their second-round match to a seeded team in Oregon's Ty Gentry and Soemarno, however, losing 8-4.
Â
The Vikings' other two doubles teams also won their first-round matches Friday, only to lose their second-round matches to seeded teams like Boniel and Roberts.
Â
Tommy Edwards and
Avery West posted the most dominant win of any doubles team for the Vikings, as they beat Fresno State's Henrique Osorio and Patrick Pech of Fresno State, 8-3. Edwards and West then faced fifth-seeded Mikus Losbergs and Kasparas Zemaitelis of Big Sky-rival Sacramento State in the second round, and lost 8-3.
Â
Otto Holtari and
Gabe Souza added a third doubles win for the Vikings in the first round, as they beat Jackson Hawk and Daniel Krutik of Saint Mary's, 8-6. However, like Boniel and Roberts, Holtari and Souza lost their second-round match to a seeded team from Oregon, as they fell 8-1 to the Ducks' Simon Stevens and Akihiro Tanaka.
Â
Souza, Roberts and
Majeed Bukhari will also be playing in the third round of the consolation singles draw Saturday. Roberts won his first-round consolation match 6-3, 7-5 over Seattle's Alex Chan Friday, and then received a bye into the third round. Bukhari, meanwhile, received a walkover into the second round and then a bye, while Souza received two straight byes into the third round.
Â
Roberts faces Gonzaga's Kyle Everly in the third round of the consolation draw at 11 a.m. Saturday, the same time Souza will play UC Davis' Chethan Swanson. Bukhari, meanwhile, will face off against Oregon's Ethan Young-Smith at 12 p.m. Saturday.
Â
Additionally, Edwards plays a bonus singles match against Saint Mary's Calvin Jordaan at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.Â
