DAY ONE RECAP
CHENEY, Wash. — Senior
Jazmin Ratcliff won her third straight Big Sky hurdles title, and the Portland State women's track and field team recorded its third-best finish in program history with a third-place finish at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships Saturday at Roos Field.
Â
Ratcliff's title in the 100-meter hurdles led the Viking women to 102 total team points at the meet Saturday, placing them third ahead of Northern Arizona at 97 points, and behind Sacramento State and Montana State at 145.90 and 142.20 points, respectively.
Â
The Vikings' third-place finish marks the team's best finish within the Big Sky since a second-place finish in 2013, which tied the Vikings' second-place finish in 2006 for the program's best overall finish at the conference outdoor meet.
Â
The Vikings placed third Saturday thanks to scoring in bunches in a couple of different events, including the 100-meter hurdles, which Ratcliff won while sophomores
CeCelia Jackson and
Akayla Anderson followed with second- and fourth-place finishes. Those three finishes gave the Vikings 23 points in the event, the most points the Vikings scored in a single event at this year's championships.
Â
Ratcliff's win in the 100-meter hurdles also makes the senior the undisputed queen of the hurdles within the Big Sky Conference, as it followed titles in last year's outdoor 100-meter hurdles and this year's indoor 60-meter hurdles. Ratcliff set the Portland State, championship and Big Sky records while winning the 100-meter hurdles at last season's Big Sky outdoor meet, and then followed it up with a school-record performance while winning the indoor 60-meter hurdles in February. Ratcliff's win Saturday then marks the senior's third straight hurdles title within the Big Sky, and the senior also stands in good position to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary meet in the 100-meter hurdles for the third straight season.
Â
Ratcliff won the 100-meter hurdles Saturday while battling a significant head wind, finishing in 13.94 seconds. Jackson placed second to Ratcliff in 14.05 seconds, while Anderson finished fourth in 14.24 seconds.
Â
Meanwhile, outside of the 100-meter hurdles, the Vikings also picked up 17 points in the 100 meters, as the women had four athletes competing in the finals of the event. Senior
Jasmine Woods led the Vikings in the 100 meters, as she placed second in 11.81 seconds. Sophomore
Genna Settle, sophomore
Baileh Simms and Ratcliff then finished fifth, sixth and seventh for the Vikings, respectively.
Â
Woods also led the Vikings in the finals of the 200 meters, as she picked up her second All-Big Sky honor of the day with a third-place finish in the event. Runners battled a head wind even more severe than the one during the finals of the 100-meter hurdles, but Woods still finished in 24.43 seconds, just .01 seconds behind Northern Arizona's Shamelle Pless, who finished second in 24.42 seconds. Settle and fellow sophomore
Whitney Diggs also placed fifth and eighth for the Vikings in the 200, respectively, giving the PSU women 11 total points in the event.
Â
Diggs scored with a sixth-place finish in the finals of the 400 meters earlier in the day, too, as she crossed the line in 55.22 seconds.
Â
Additionally, Diggs capped the meet for the Viking women by running the anchor leg of the team's 4x400-meter relay team that placed fifth in a school-record 3:46.96. Diggs joined Woods, freshman
Nyalual Beng and junior
Kris Tollefson in setting the record, which beat the old record of 3:47.59, set in 2013.
Â
Outside of the sprints, senior
Camelia Mayfield also scored in her second event of the championships, as she placed seventh in the finals of the 5,000 meters Saturday, after placing fourth in the finals of the 10,000 meters Friday night.
Â
In the field, freshman
Ta'mara Richey earned All-Big Sky honors with a second-place finish in the women's triple jump, as set a personal-best jump of 39-08.50 (12.10m) at the meet. Junior
D'nara Jones also placed seventh in the triple jump for the Vikings, finishing with a mark of 37-06.75 (11.45m).
Â
Additionally, Jackson preceded her second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a third-place finish in the women's high jump to start the day. Jackson finished third while setting a new personal best in the event, as she cleared 5-07.00 (1.70m).
Â
On the men's side, junior
Sheldon Prince scored in the finals of the 400 meters, while the Viking men's 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams also scored to lead the men to an 11th-place finish with 13 total team points.
Â
Prince finished seventh in the men's 400 meters in 47.98 seconds, and then came back to anchor the Vikings' 4x400-meter relay team that finished eighth in 3:18.49. Additionally, Prince joined freshmen
Hunter Pfefferkorn and
Spenser Schmidt, as well as sophomore
Mitchell Gable on the Vikings' 4x100-meter relay team that placed fifth in 41.79 seconds.
Â
Junior
Major Oni, meanwhile, just missed out on scoring with a ninth-place finish in the triple jump, but set a new personal best in the event a day after he set a new PR in the men's hammer. Oni capped his unique double at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships with a jump of 45-07.00 (13.89m), moving him up to seventh in the event at Portland State.
Â
The Vikings will now shift their focus to the NCAA West Preliminary meet, which will take place in Austin, Texas, from May 28-30. Qualification for the meet ends at midnight Sunday, and accepted entries will be announced late next week.
