SEATTLE, Wash. — The Proclaimers promised their love interests they'd walk 500 miles (and 500 more) to show their affection. The Portland State track & field athletes competing Saturday – on Valentine's Day – at the Husky Classic didn't match that mileage. They fell 999 miles short, in fact. But if their performance in the women's and men's mile is anything to go by, then they've won Valentine's Day within their respective relationships.
Emma Stolte led the Vikings' three milers with the No. 2 all-time mark in the women's mile at Dempsey Indoor.
Abdinajib Abade and
Ari Smith then followed up in the men's mile, setting the No. 7 overall mark and the freshman record, respectively.
Stolte's big finish in the mile could have been predicted. The senior was coming off a school record in the 800 meters two weeks earlier at the Inland Northwest Invitational, and had already moved up to second all-time in the 3k at the UW Preview on Jan. 17.
Even still, Stolte's mile time of 4:39.65 represented a 15-second personal best and put her just outside the top 10 in the Big Sky record book. Northern Arizona's Emma Stutzman set the current No. 10 time at 4:37.91 earlier this season. Stolte now ranks third in the conference within this season, behind Stutzman and Hayley Burns, also of Northern Arizona.
Abade and Smith, meanwhile, ran in the same section of the men's mile. Abade finished sixth in their heat in a time of 4:12.58. That was 17 seconds faster than his only other indoor mile time as a Viking and moved him up to seventh all-time in the event. He's the first new entrant to the overall top 10 in the men's mile since Jordan MacIntosh and Luke Ramirez in 2022.
Smith nearly joined Abade in the overall top 10 while finishing 11th in their heat in 4:15.72. Smith's time put him three-tenths of a second under the freshman record that teammate
Nick Moore set on the same track last season at the UW Invitational.
Abade returned to the track for the final event of the day, as he ran the anchor leg of the Viking men's 4x400-meter relay. Freshmen
Zach Payne and
Jack Macdonald, and sophomore
Dillon Brost, joined Abade on the relay, as the Vikings beat two teams from Stanford to win the event in 3:24.18. Their time was seven-tenths of a second under the top-finishing Stanford team.
The Viking women set a seasonal best in their own 4x400-meter relay.
Ashley Peterson,
Sienna Rosario,
Savannah Beasley and
Lydia Medina cracked four minutes while placing fifth in 3:59.75.
Peterson was coming off an indoor best in the open 400 meters earlier in the day. She finished in 58.17 seconds to shave close to half a second off the time she set at the UW Preview earlier this season. Peterson is now only four-tenths of a second outside of the overall top 10. There hasn't been a new entry in the all-time rankings in the women's indoor 400 since Kristen O'Handley in 2020.
Rosario, who took the baton from Peterson in the relay, led a group of four Vikings in the prelims of the women's 60 meters. She was unlucky to not make the final, finishing just two spots outside of a qualifying spot while finishing just two-hundredths of a second off her personal best in 7.83 seconds.
Akanesi Latu-Alves shaved two-tenths of a second off her personal best in the 60 meters, finishing in 8.18 seconds. Latu-Alves also set an overall best in the long jump while placing 17th in 16-10.00 (5.13m).
Ocean Rideout added five and a half inches to her own best in the long jump while placing 10th overall with a mark of 17-06.75 (5.35m).
Avonlea Edwards set another indoor best in the field for the Vikings, adding close to two feet to her mark in the women's shot put with a best throw of 34-08.25 (10.57m).
Jaelyn Sayler and
Mikey LaGris made their season debuts while also competing in the women's and men's shot put. Sayler opened her season with a mark of 35-10.50 (10.93m) on the women's side, while LaGris posted a mark of 33-03.25 (10.14m) on the men's side.
Elsewhere,
Amir Ahmed shaved eight-tenths of a second off his indoor best in the 800 meters, finishing in 1:55.22 to better a mark he set two weeks earlier at the Inland Northwest Invitational.
The Vikings only have two more weekends remaining in the indoor season after Saturday, barring someone qualifying for nationals. They'll first head to the George Fox Indoor #2 meet on Feb. 21, before heading to Pocatello, Idaho, for the Big Sky Indoor Championships, Feb. 26-28.
So, there's still time to make up that 999-mile deficit against The Proclaimers. Should it be needed.
