Simms Defends Conference Title with Record Mark in Women's Long Jump at Big Sky Outdoor Championships

CHENEY, Wash. —
Sophomore Baileh Simms defended her Big Sky title in the women's long jump while setting new school, meet and Big Sky records in the event, as she led the Portland State track and field teams as they opened the Big Sky Outdoor Championships Friday at Roos Field.

Simms, who won the Big Sky title in the outdoor long jump as a freshman last season, improved to 2-for-2 in the outdoor long jump with her record mark of 20-09.25 (6.33m) Friday. Simms' mark crushed her previous best in the event by over a foot, blowing away the 19-08.00 (5.99m) she set at the Stanford Invitational earlier this season.

Simms' mark Friday breaks Montana State's Lacy Hinzpeter's 12-year-old Big Sky and championship meet record of 20-09, and breaks Kerry-Ann Blackwood's nine-year-old school record of 20-08.00 (6.30m).

Additionally, Simms' record mark moves her into a tie for third in the NCAA west in the women's long jump this season, making her a contender to become the Vikings' first national qualifier in the long jump when she competes at the NCAA West Preliminary in Austin, Texas at the end of May.

Simms wasn't alone in the long jump, either, Friday, as fellow sophomore Genna Settle and freshman Ta'mara Richey followed with third- and fourth-place finishes to give the Vikings 21 total points from the event. Settle followed Simms' lead with a huge personal best in placing third, beating her old best by nearly a foot with her mark of 19-01.50 (5.83m) Friday. Richey, meanwhile, also cracked 19 feet while placing fourth in the long jump, soaring to a mark of 19-00.75 (5.81m).

Senior Camelia Mayfield also scored for the Vikings Friday, as she finished fourth in the women's 10,000 meters in 36:37.44. Mayfield's finish gave the Viking women 26 points at the end of the day Friday, placing them fifth in the team standings going into the final day of the competition Saturday.

The Vikings positioned themselves well to score big points Saturday, too, especially in the sprints where the Vikings qualified multiple athletes in several events.

Four Vikings made it through the prelims of the women's 100 meters, led by senior Jasmine Woods, who set a new personal best while placing second overall with her time of 11.62 seconds. Settle followed with a fifth-place overall finish in 11.79 seconds, while Simms and senior Jazmin Ratcliff tied for sixth while each setting huge personal bests with their finishes in 11.84 seconds.

Woods also led three Vikings through to the finals of the 200 meters, as she placed fourth in 24.16 seconds. Settle and Diggs followed Woods into the finals of the 200 meters, as they placed sixth and eighth, respectively, in 24.21 and 24.40 seconds.

Diggs also made it through to the finals of the 400 meters, as she placed seventh overall as the Vikings' only runner in the prelims of the event.

Additionally, the Viking trio of Ratcliff and sophomores CeCelia Jackson and Akayla Anderson made it through to the finals of the 100-meter hurdles, with Ratcliff and Jackson finishing the prelims first and second overall, respectively.

Ratcliff snapped a run of frustrating results in the 100-meter hurdles with her time in the prelims Friday, as she crushed her previous seasonal best by over three-tenths of a second with her time of 13.46 seconds. Ratcliff's finish finally puts the senior in good position to qualify for her third straight NCAA West Preliminary meet in the 100-meter hurdles, after a season-long struggle on the qualifying bubble in the event. Ratcliff now ranks 24th in the NCAA west in the 100-meter hurdles, and could lower her time further in the finals of the event Saturday.

Meanwhile, on the men's side, the Vikings picked up six points in the high jump, with juniors Rockwell Tufty and Kevin Robinson placing fourth and eighth, respectively in the event. Tufty finished fourth with a mark of 6-08.75 (2.05m) Friday, while Robinson placed eighth with a personal-best mark of 6-05.50 (1.97m). Fellow junior Tyson Stipic also finished with a mark of 6-05.50 (1.97m), but placed behind Robinson at ninth overall off of misses.

Outside of the high jump, junior Sheldon Prince qualified for the finals of the 400 meters with a sixth-place finish in the prelims, crossing the line in 48.63 seconds Friday.

The Viking men also set a number of new personal bests Friday, starting with Major Oni, who set a new personal best in the hammer with a throw of 164-04 (50.10m). Oni's new PR makes him just the second Viking to ever crack 50 meters in the hammer, following Steve James, who set the school record in the event at 176-00 (53.64m) way back in 1971.

Sophomore Ben Richardson also set a new personal best while just missing out on qualifying in the 800 meters. Richardson placed ninth in the prelims in 1:53.01, while juniors T-Roy Brown and Spencer Russell followed at 10th and 11th overall in 1:53.13 and 1:53.22, respectively.

Both the Viking men and women resume the Big Sky Outdoor meet at 10:30 a.m. (PT) Saturday, as events get underway with the women's high jump and men's triple jump.

The Viking women will be chasing a top spot in the conference standings when the meet resumes Saturday. Montana State leads the women's standings with 48.20 points going into the meet's final day, while Sacramento State follows with 40.40 points. Eastern Washington and Montana, meanwhile, rank third and fourth with 32 and 29.20 points, respectively, just ahead of the Vikings with 26 points.
