NEWBERG, Ore. — The story goes that Jerry West shut down Kobe Bryant's draft workout with the Los Angeles Lakers after only 10-15 minutes. He had seen enough. The talent was obvious.
Â
Jack Macdonald may be the Portland State track & field program's Kobe. The freshman sprinter ran the second-fastest qualifying time in the 60 meters Saturday at the GFU Indoor #2 meet. But rather than have Macdonald run in the final at the Austin Sports Complex, head coach
Joseph Blue and sprints coach
Christian Carter shut Macdonald down.
Â
They had seen enough. Macdonald's talent was obvious, and why risk an injury ahead of the Big Sky Indoor Championships next week, Feb. 26-28, in Pocatello, Idaho.
Â
Macdonald's qualifying time of 6.95 seconds represented his second-best mark of the season, trailing only his personal best of 6.93 seconds from the Silver & Blue Invitational on Jan. 9. That previous mark came at nearly 4,500 feet of elevation. Saturday's mark represented Macdonald's first time under 7.00 seconds at sea level.
Â
Dillon Brost followed Macdonald as the team's second-fastest finisher in the men's 60 meters. Brost placed 14th overall in 7.22 seconds, shaving one-hundredth of a second off the time he set at the UW Preview last season.
Â
Aidan Sweeney and
Phoenix Bakkum also lowered personal bests in the 60 meters while finishing in 7.26 and 7.37 seconds, respectively.
Â
Sweeney led the Vikings in the men's 60-meter hurdles, qualifying for the finals with a time of 8.59 seconds in the prelims. Sweeney went on to place fifth in the final in 8.64 seconds.
James Timmins, meanwhile, was the first athlete out of a qualifying spot, but still set a collegiate best with his time of 8.90 seconds in the prelims.
Â
Freshman
Carson Schall ran the 60-meter hurdles for the first time, placing right behind Timmins at 10th in 8.94 seconds. That moves Schall up to ninth in the freshman top 10 in the event.
Â
Savannah Beasley matched Sweeney by making the finals of the 60-meter hurdles on the women's side. Beasley ran identical times (9.49 seconds) between the prelims and final, placing fourth in the prelims and fifth in the final.
Â
Off the track,
Daniel Coppedge won the men's weight throw despite not having his best stuff. Coppedge led after his third out of six throws, then finished with his best mark of the day at 52-04.00 (15.95m). That was well below Coppedge's school record of 57-11.00 (17.65m), which he set three weeks ago at the Inland Northwest Invitational, but it was still 11 inches better than his closest competition Saturday.
Â
Avonlea Edwards placed second on the women's side of the weight throw as she and teammate
Natalie Fisher both set personal bests in the event. Edwards' new best came on her fourth attempt out of six Saturday with a throw of 45-04.50 (13.83m). That added close to four feet to the personal best she set at the Inland Northwest Invitational and moved her up to second in the freshman top 10.
Â
Fisher moved up to seventh in the freshman top 10 while adding two and a half feet to her personal best with a mark of 40-10.25 (12.45m) Saturday.
Â
The Viking women's throwers also got a new collegiate best out of
Jaelyn Sayler in the shot put. Sayler placed fourth Saturday while adding close to three inches to the mark she set last week at the Husky Classic with a throw of 36-01.25 (11.00m).
Â
Ocean Rideout added another podium finish for the Viking women in the field. Rideout placed second in the long jump with a mark of 17-06.25 (5.34). The jump came on her fifth attempt and temporarily moved her into the lead before Alexus Hudson-Williams of the East Elites Track Club passed her on her final attempt.
Â
Jackson Mathers placed second in the men's high jump while matching the indoor best of 6-00.75 (1.85m) he set a week ago at the Husky Classic. Mathers cleared on his first attempts at 1.75, 1.80 and 1.85 meters, but then missed on all three attempts at 1.90 meters.
Â
Mathers also placed sixth in the men's long jump with a mark of 19-11.00 (6.07m), just behind teammate
Damien Parrow at 19-11.75 (6.09m).
Â
The Vikings now head to the Big Sky indoor meet. Events for the Vikings start Friday with prelims on the track in most events and a handful of field events.
Â
It's why Macdonald got the Kobe treatment. Blue and Carter wanted to save his best for when it matters most.
