PORTLAND, Ore. — Despite a third straight doubles-point victory, the Portland State men's tennis team lost 5-2 to Northern Arizona Sunday at West Hills Racquet and Fitness Club.
The Vikings (5-16, 2-7 Big Sky) won a pair of tiebreakers at No. 1 and 3 doubles to take the doubles point from the Lumberjacks (11-8, 6-3 Big Sky), but the Lumberjacks won five of the six singles matches to secure the match victory.
Portland State freshman
Kacper Stelmaszak was the Vikings' lone winner in the singles lineup, as he came back from a set down to beat NAU's Alexandre Locci 10-5 in a match tiebreaker, and win 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5). Stelmaszak has now won two straight conference matches, and has won three of his last five completed matches overall.
The rest of the Vikings lineup faced an uphill battle, however, as a couple of late scratches forced the Vikings' bottom four singles players to play two spots above where they had been. Consequently, the Lumberjacks won in straight sets at Nos. 3-6, while NAU No. 1 Jordan Gobatie beat PSU No. 1
Brent Wheeler 6-2, 6-0.
Sophomore
Nate Chart played a tight first set in his match against NAU's Alan Barrios at No. 6, but lost the set 7-5, and Barrios prevailed in the match, 7-5, 6-2. Junior
Alec Marx also played a couple tight sets against NAU's Kester Black, but lost 6-3, 6-4. Additionally, freshman
Jonathan Pike returned to the Vikings' singles lineup for the first time since Feb. 23, but NAU's Trevor Unger spoiled his return with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Pike.
The Vikings had more luck in doubles, where Wheeler and Risenhoover, and Mishra and Marx, won their matches in tiebreakers at No. 1 and 3, respectively. Wheeler and Risenhoover beat NAU's Unger and Fabio Tomasetti 8-7 (5) at No. 1, while Mishra and Marx beat Black and Barrios 8-7 (2).
Mishra and Marx won in a tiebreaker against Seattle on Friday, too, and have now won six of their seven matches together this season, since Mishra returned to the Vikings' lineup on March 26 against Creighton. The Vikings as a team have also won the doubles point in six of their seven matches since Mishra's return.
The Vikings conclude their regular season against Idaho State Friday, April 19. PSU will host the match at 6 p.m. (PT) at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash.
