Wil Cochrane and
Matt Pronesti closed the Portland State men's tennis team's 2014 fall season in style Sunday, as they claimed the Vikings' first main draw doubles title since 2010 with a win in the second doubles flight at the PNW Intercollegiates at the Central Park Tennis Club.
Â
Cochrane and Pronesti had to battle back for the win Sunday, as they fell down 4-1 early on in the title match against Gonzaga's Sergio Chip and Vicente Varas. Cochrane and Pronesti found a spark from there, however, and won seven of the final nine games of the match to win 8-6, with Pronesti sealing the victory on an ace serve right down the middle of the court.
Â
"This was a huge win for our Boys from Medford," PSU head coach
Toby Krauel said. "They were the more aggressive team down the stretch of the match, attacking the net and forcing short lobs from their opponents. Their teammates screamed their lungs out as Matt served amazingly, and Wil returned serve with precision."
Â
Cochrane and Pronesti's win marks the first main draw doubles title by a Viking team since Chris Rice and Roman Margoulis won the Utah State Fall Invitational in September 2010, over four years ago. The win also marks the first main draw win of any kind for the Vikings since Mitch Somach won the singles title at the Corvallis City Championships in October 2011.
Â
Additionally, the doubles title marks a fitting end to a standout tournament for Cochrane, who also won the backdraw of the fourth singles flight Saturday.
Â
Cochrane and Pronesti's doubles win also capped the fall season for the Portland State men's tennis team, as the Vikings will now turn their focus to the start of their dual season in January.
