Box Score BEAVERTON, Ore. - The Portland State men's tennis team played its closest Big Sky match of the season on Sunday, winning three singles matches before ultimately falling 4-3 to Weber State at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
The Wildcats clinched the win with the doubles point followed by a trio of three-set victories in singles play. Five of six singles matches went to three sets.
With just one match remaining in the regular season, the Vikings dropped to 4-13 overall and 0-7 in conference play. The Wildcats, meanwhile, improved to 9-11 overall and 5-3 in conference action.
Luca Prino and Edoardo Cravanzola earned the Vikings' lone doubles win, defeating Liam Day and Jordan Coutinho 6-1 at the No. 3 spot. However, Weber State claimed the crucial opening point with 6-3 wins on courts one and two.
In singles play, Prino, Hubert Theriault, and Hayden Elliott delivered wins for the Vikings. Elliott was the only Viking to win in straight sets, taking down William Zulch 6-2, 7-5 on court six. Prino battled through a marathon match at the top spot, edging Tristan Sarap 6-4, 6-7 (8), 6-4 in a back-and-forth contest. Theriault stayed hot on court two, notching his third straight victory with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 comeback win over Connor Kruger.
Weber State sealed the match with three-set victories on courts three, four, and five.
Portland State will close out its season this Saturday (April 19) with a home match against Idaho State at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m.
